Time for a quick "huddle" on one of the most discussed topics in the autism community. Do you know the answer to this one?

QUESTION:
True or False: Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is a common therapy for individuals with autism.

ANSWER: TRUE. ✅
Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is one of the most widely used and researched interventions for individuals with autism and other intellectual disabilities.

🛡️ Why it’s part of the Care Puzzle:
Focus on Skills: ABA focuses on teaching specific, functional skills—like communication, social interactions, and daily living tasks (like brushing teeth or crossing the street safely). 🦷🚿

Data-Driven: Everything is tracked! Our team and therapists look at what triggers a behavior and what happens after, helping us understand why a resident is struggling.

Positive Reinforcement: It uses rewards and encouragement to help "lock in" helpful behaviors and reduce those that might be harmful or restrictive to a resident's Independence. 🌟

💡 The Harrell Approach:
At Harrell Assisted Living, we believe therapy should be person-centered. We work alongside ABA professionals to ensure that these strategies are implemented with compassion, dignity, and a focus on the resident's unique sensory needs.

Did you know the "True" answer, or have you seen ABA in action before? Share your experience in the comments! 👇

At Harrell Assisted Living Homes, we see the power of Maya Angelou’s words every day. Her legacy as an activist and a poet reminds us that true care is rooted in dignity and how we make one another feel.

Take sometime to revisit @ Maya Angelou's timeless wisdom. Her perspective on resilience and the human spirit really challenged how I think about our role as caregivers.

We highly recommend following her foundation's work to keep her mission alive. 🖤

As Black History Month draws to a close, we at Harrell Assisted Living Homes want to take a "huddle" to honor the profound impact of Black pioneers in the medical and caregiving fields.

In Philadelphia, our history is deeply rooted in the resilience and innovation of Black healthcare leaders who fought for Medical Equity long before it was a buzzword. From the local neighborhood healers to the first Black doctors and nurses, their legacy is the foundation of the compassionate care we provide today.

🛡️ Why This Month Matters in Our Homes:
Representation in Nursing: We celebrate the trailblazers like Mary Eliza Mahoney, the first Black licensed nurse in the U.S., who paved the way for our own incredible team, including Nurse Rochelle.

Advocating for the Vulnerable: Black history is a history of advocacy. We draw inspiration from leaders who fought to ensure that those with disabilities—especially within the Black community—received dignity, housing, and specialized medical attention.

Community as Medicine: At Harrell, we believe in the "Village" approach. This concept of communal care and looking out for one's neighbor is a cornerstone of Black culture that we practice in our luxury Philly homes every single day.

💡 Our Ongoing Commitment
Black History isn't just a month of reflection; it’s a 365-day commitment to Inclusion. We are dedicated to:

Providing Culturally Competent Care: Understanding the unique lived experiences of our Black residents and their families.

Closing the Health Gap: Ensuring our residents with IDD and autism have access to top-tier medical monitoring and advocacy.

Empowering Black Professionals: Creating a workplace where Black caregivers and nurses can lead and thrive.

"Heal the heart, and the body will follow."

We honor the past by building a more equitable future for every resident in our care. 💙✊🏾

🥗 Let’s All Eat Right Day! (Feb 25) 🥗

Today is Let’s All Eat Right Day, a day dedicated to reflecting on our nutritional habits and making choices that fuel our bodies for the long haul.

At Harrell Assisted Living Homes, we know that "eating right" looks different for everyone. For our residents with intellectual disabilities and autism, nutrition isn't just about calories—it's about sensory comfort, independence, and safety.

🥦 5 Tips for Caregivers to Achieve Nutritional Success:
1. Respect the Sensory Profile 👅
Many individuals with autism or IDD have strong preferences for specific textures or colors (the "Beige Diet"). Don't fight the sensory system—work with it! If they love "crunch," try air-fried veggie chips instead of just raw carrots. If they prefer "smooth," blend spinach into a fruit smoothie.

2. The "One-New-Food" Huddle 🍎
Introducing new foods can be overwhelming. Try the Low-Stakes Exposure method: Place a small piece of a new food on the plate next to a favorite "safe food." There is no pressure to eat it—just seeing, smelling, and touching it counts as a win!

3. Use Visual Meal Guides 📸
Abstract concepts like "balanced diet" can be hard to grasp. Use visual aids or "Plate Dividers" to show exactly where the protein, grains, and veggies go.

4. Hydration is Health 💧
Thirst cues can be harder for some individuals to recognize. Don't wait for them to ask for water. Establish a "Hydration Routine"—for example, a small glass of water after every transition or activity—to prevent dehydration and the fatigue that comes with it.

5. Prep for Safety (The Swallow Check) 🩺
Always be mindful of Dysphagia (swallowing difficulties). For residents at risk, "eating right" means ensuring food is cut into 1/2-inch pieces, softened, or pureed to the correct consistency. As Nurse Rochelle always says: "A safe meal is a successful meal!"

💡 Small Changes, Big Impact
Eating right doesn't have to happen overnight. It’s about the small, consistent choices we make in our Philadelphia homes every day that build a foundation of wellness.

It’s Wednesday, Philly! If the "Mid-Week Blues" are starting to creep in, take a deep breath. Whether you are a dedicated DSP, a hardworking nurse, or a family caregiver, we know that the "hump" of the week can feel a little steep.

At Harrell Assisted Living Homes, we don’t just support our residents—we support the PEOPLE who support them. You can't pour from an empty cup, so let’s refill yours today! ☕️🔋

🛠️ Your Mid-Week Refocus Kit:
1. The 5-Minute "Micro-Break": Step away from the screen or the task. Step outside for some fresh Philly air (even if it’s chilly!). A quick change of scenery resets the nervous system. 🌬️

2. Celebrate the "Small Wins": Did a resident master a new step in their budgeting goal? Did you finally organize that supply closet? Those aren't small—they are the building blocks of a great week! 🏆

3. Sensory Check-In: Caregiving can be high-sensory work. If you're feeling overwhelmed, dim the lights for a moment or use noise-canceling headphones during your break to recalibrate. 🎧

4. Peer Support Huddle: Reach out to a fellow DSP or nurse. Sometimes just saying, "Man, it’s a Wednesday," to someone who gets it is the best medicine. 🤝

💡 Resource Spotlight for our Team:
Don't forget that we have internal resources available for our staff! If you need to talk through a challenging case or just need a moment of mentorship with Nurse Rochelle, our door is always open.

To our community of caregivers: You are the heartbeat of healthcare. We see your hard work, your patience, and your heart. You’ve got this, and we’ve got YOU.

The "Daily Huddle" isn't just for our staff—it’s for our brains, too! We’ve spent the morning tackling today's Hard Level Sudoku, and we are happy to report: The grid is full!

At Harrell Assisted Living Homes, we encourage our residents and staff to engage in "Brain Games" like Sudoku. Why? Because keeping the mind sharp is just as important as keeping the body active.

🧠 Why We Love Sudoku for Brain Health:
Logic over Luck: It’s all about spotting patterns and using deductive reasoning—skills we use every day in caregiving!

Concentration: Focusing on one square at a time helps reduce "mental noise" and improves attention to detail.

Sense of Accomplishment: There’s nothing quite like the feeling of placing that final 9 in its correct home.

💡 Pro-Tip for the Hard Levels:
Stuck on a row? Try the "X-Wing" strategy—look for columns where a number only fits in two places that align into a square. It’s a game-changer for those expert-level puzzles!

Did you solve today's puzzle yet? Or did that bottom-left corner give you a run for your money? Let us know your time in the comments! ⏱️👇

At Harrell Assisted Living Homes, we believe that everyone has something valuable to contribute. Volunteering isn't just about helping others—it's about building confidence, learning new skills, and being an active part of our Philly "huddle."

This week, we are highlighting an incredible inclusive volunteer opportunity right here in Philadelphia!

🤝 The Opportunity: MANNA (Metropolitan Area Neighborhood Nutrition Alliance)
MANNA is a local organization that prepares and delivers medically tailored meals to neighbors battling critical illnesses. They love welcoming volunteers of all abilities!

The Task: "Kitchen Assistant" – Helping to scoop, portion, and package meals in a structured, repetitive, and supportive environment.

Why it’s great for IDD/Autism: The kitchen tasks are rhythmic and predictable, making it a great place to practice "Step-by-Step" life skills while helping the community.

Where: 420 North 20th Street, Philadelphia, PA.

When: Various shifts available this week!

💡 Pro-Tip for Caregivers:
If this is your loved one’s first time volunteering, try a "Discovery Shift":

Schedule a Tour: Visit the kitchen first to get used to the sounds and smells.

Short Bursts: Start with a 1-hour shift to build stamina and confidence.

Visual Aids: Bring a checklist of the "5 Steps" of the task to help them stay on track!

🔗 Learn more and sign up here: www.mannapa.org/volunteer

🌟 Inclusion in Action
Volunteering bridges the gap between being "cared for" and "caring for others." Whether it’s packing a meal or sorting a donation, these moments of service prove that our community is Philly Strong.

Are you or your loved one planning to volunteer this week? Tell us where you're serving in the comments! 👇

The snow is coming down hard, and at Harrell Assisted Living, our "Winter Warrior" mode is officially in full effect! When you’re caring for loved ones with intellectual disabilities or autism, a blizzard isn't just about snow—it’s about maintaining safety, routine, and comfort.

🛡️ Your Blizzard Safety Checklist:
1. Secure the Perimeter: Check that all walkways and ramps are heavily salted. For our residents with mobility challenges, a patch of ice is a major hazard. 🧊

2. Power-Up Prep: Ensure all AAC communication devices, tablets, and medical equipment are plugged in and at 100% now in case of power flickers. Batteries = Independence! 🔋

3. Sensory Comfort Kits: Blizzards can be loud and scary. Keep noise-canceling headphones, weighted blankets, and favorite "comfort snacks" nearby to help manage anxiety from the wind and sirens. 🎧🧸

4. Temperature Check: Keep the thermostat steady. Individuals with certain IDD conditions may have difficulty regulating body temperature—extra layers and warm socks are a must! 🧦

5. The "Huddle" Communication: Keep a list of emergency contacts and pharmacy numbers in a visible spot. If you are a caregiver traveling today, please take it slow or stay put if the city issues a travel ban. 🛑

🏥 We’ve Got You Covered
Inside our Harrell homes, Nurse Rochelle and our dedicated team are ensuring every resident is warm, fed, and engaged with indoor activities. We are monitoring the weather closely so you can rest easy knowing the "Huddle" is safe and sound.

Stay off the roads if you can, Philly! Let’s keep each other safe.

How are you keeping your loved ones entertained during the storm? Drop your favorite indoor activity below! 👇
