🥗 Let’s All Eat Right Day! (Feb 25) 🥗
Today is Let’s All Eat Right Day, a day dedicated to reflecting on our nutritional habits and making choices that fuel our bodies for the long haul.
At Harrell Assisted Living Homes, we know that "eating right" looks different for everyone. For our residents with intellectual disabilities and autism, nutrition isn't just about calories—it's about sensory comfort, independence, and safety.
🥦 5 Tips for Caregivers to Achieve Nutritional Success:
1. Respect the Sensory Profile 👅
Many individuals with autism or IDD have strong preferences for specific textures or colors (the "Beige Diet"). Don't fight the sensory system—work with it! If they love "crunch," try air-fried veggie chips instead of just raw carrots. If they prefer "smooth," blend spinach into a fruit smoothie.
2. The "One-New-Food" Huddle 🍎
Introducing new foods can be overwhelming. Try the Low-Stakes Exposure method: Place a small piece of a new food on the plate next to a favorite "safe food." There is no pressure to eat it—just seeing, smelling, and touching it counts as a win!
3. Use Visual Meal Guides 📸
Abstract concepts like "balanced diet" can be hard to grasp. Use visual aids or "Plate Dividers" to show exactly where the protein, grains, and veggies go.
4. Hydration is Health 💧
Thirst cues can be harder for some individuals to recognize. Don't wait for them to ask for water. Establish a "Hydration Routine"—for example, a small glass of water after every transition or activity—to prevent dehydration and the fatigue that comes with it.
5. Prep for Safety (The Swallow Check) 🩺
Always be mindful of Dysphagia (swallowing difficulties). For residents at risk, "eating right" means ensuring food is cut into 1/2-inch pieces, softened, or pureed to the correct consistency. As Nurse Rochelle always says: "A safe meal is a successful meal!"
💡 Small Changes, Big Impact
Eating right doesn't have to happen overnight. It’s about the small, consistent choices we make in our Philadelphia homes every day that build a foundation of wellness.
