Winter illnesses are on the rise. These illnesses spread easily and can cause serious complications, especially for babies, older adults, and immunocompromised individuals. Prevention and early care help protect your family.
Know the symptoms and contagious periods:
🦠Flu: fever, cough, sore throat, body aches
People with flu can be contagious about 1 day before symptoms start and up to 5–7 days after becoming sick (longer in children or those with weakened immune systems).

🦠COVID-19: fever/chills, cough, shortness of breath, loss of taste or smell
People with COVID-19 can be contagious 1–2 days before symptoms and usually up to 5–10 days after symptom onset, depending on severity and immune status.

🦠RSV: runny nose, cough, fever, wheezing
People with RSV are usually contagious for 3–8 days; infants and immunocompromised individuals may spread the virus longer, even after symptoms improve.

🦠Strep Throat: sore throat, fever, swollen lymph nodes, red/swollen tonsils
With appropriate antibiotics, people are generally no longer contagious after 24 hours. Without treatment, strep throat can remain contagious for weeks.

Protect yourself: wash your hands, stay home when sick, cover coughs, and talk to your provider about vaccines. Vaccination is the best defense: https://www.cdc.gov/respiratory-viruses/prevention/index.html
