The inspiration to write this post has come from the amount of patients asking me if they should get the flu shot or not. Rather than sharing my opinion, I share the science and support them in their choices. Below is a summary of a highly prestigious review....
A Cochrane review including more than 80,000 healthy adults from 52 clinical trials (15 of the included trials were industry sponsored) concluded the following:
1.4% had lower risk of influenza
(3.4% and 19% lower risk of influenza in elderly and children)
3.4% had lower risk of influenza-like illness
(2.5% and 8% lower risk of influenza-like illness in elderly and children)
2.3% experienced fever after vaccination (compared to placebo).
It is important to note that when the industry sponsors the studies, there is heavy bias (known as funding bias) for the numbers to be manipulated in favor of the interest of the study’s financial sponsor. It is important to consider that the percentages are likely lower for effectiveness of the vaccine and adverse reactions are underreported.
There is not enough solid data to support the anti-vaccine movement, however at the same time the so called “evidence” for CERTAIN vaccines is highly questionable and it is important to not fall into the other extreme of drinking the cool-aid and believing everything the mainstream media states as fact.
It is important to read the science beyond the title or the conclusion and know the kind of study, who is funding/sponsoring the study, etc. and consider every individual vaccine rather than the extremes of pro/anti all vaccines. In the end it’s about pro choice, however first and foremost, we must be informed and educated about the choices we are making for ourselves, our family and our community.
