Did you know breathing in smoke can lead to increased risk of chronic diseases like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), lung cancer, and heart attacks? It can also worsen symptoms of asthma and autoimmune conditions, like rheumatoid arthritis. Exposure to wildfire smoke has been shown to increase risk of heart problems like stroke, heart disease, and high blood pressure.

Continue checking your local air quality. When air quality is unhealthy, follow these tips to stay safe.

✔️ Avoid outdoor activity as much as possible.

✔️ Wear a NIOSH Approved N95 respirator fitted correctly.

✔️ Set your air conditioner to recirculate mode.

CDC’s Preventive Health and Health Services (PHHS) Block Grant helps fund innovative programs, like Colorado’s Innovation Incubator, to select exciting new public health project proposals. The Health eMoms survey was a selected project and provided a new way of collecting long-term postpartum data from Colorado’s birthing population to measure breastfeeding, vaccination rates, and many other birth-related topics. This project helps improve health outcomes among moms and babies.

It’s estimated that Arkansas is home to over 90 homeless shelters and over 5,000 people experiencing homelessness across the state.

To get this population the services it needs, the Arkansas Department of Health (ADH) hired a homeless shelter and encampment coordinator with investments from CDC’s Public Health Infrastructure Grant.

The coordinator plays a vital role in connecting shelters and organizations across the state to ADH services, such as to***co and substance use counseling, chronic disease screenings and counseling, immunizations, and more.
