Each child needs a proactive plan for minimizing stress built up, and helping the child feel safe during moments of stress. We need to be aware of the common daily stressors for the child and build in accommodations to initially lessen the stressors. We need to build in a sensory diet that calms the child when over-aroused, and alerts them when under-aroused. In addition we need to give the child frequent breaks to allow the child to rebound and regroup. When under stress we need to teach the child that we are a "safe" source of soothing, and help the child regulate. Overtime, if they value use as a trusted guide, we can begin to teach emotional coping skills.
