Why do you need to have your eyes dilated during an eye exam? Because eye doctors are mean! Just kidding! Eye dilation is an essential part of eye exams. While you may not need it every time, the frequency will depend upon the health of your eye. When your eyes are dilated, it allows the doctor to get a better view of the back of your eye, including the retina, macula, and optic nerve.

Dilation helps with early detection of conditions like glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy. Early detection means early treatment, which can prevent vision loss!

Sometimes we can use the Optomap camera to replace dilation because it takes great pictures of the back of your eye. It shows even more than the doctor can see with dilation! Ask about it at your next appointment!
