On the morning of Saturday, Sept. 30 at approximately 615 am the Sheriff's Office received a call from a motorist on Rend City Road who was traveling north of State Highway 14. The caller stated that a subject was standing in the middle of the roadway and attempted to wave her down. As she slowed, she stated that the subject attempted to enter her vehicle. As a result, she continued on and contacted 911. The caller described the subject as being a black male wearing dark clothing. A Deputy was assigned the call and responded to the area. Upon arrival, the subject was located in the described area standing in the roadway. The Deputy made contact and began speaking with the subject. Shortly thereafter, the subject became agitated and a physical confrontation ensued. During the physical confrontation, the subject was able to enter the driver compartment of the Deputies patrol car. The Deputy and the subject continued to struggle until the subject was able to speed away, dragging the Deputy alongside the patrol car. As the Deputy was being dragged, the subject aggressively swerved into the oncoming lane of traffic, where the Deputy was then thrown from the vehicle.
The subject continued to drive away and eventually crashed the squad car near the intersection of Rend City Road and the Rend Lake Dam Road. Soon after, the subject confronted a citizen who had just parked at a recreation lot. The subject approached and battered the citizen before trying to make entry into the citizens vehicle. His attempt to steal the vehicle was unsuccessful and the subject then fled on foot to the area of the Rend Lake Visitor Center and Maintenance Compound.
Responding Deputies as well as a host of municipal officers from throughout Franklin County responded to assist in the search. At approximately 720 am a Deputy located the subject who had concealed himself within the restricted fenced in area near the Rend Lake Visitor Center. Assisting Officers soon made entry into the area and the subject was taken into custody without further incident.
The Deputy was transported by ambulance for treatment and is currently recovering from sustained injuries. The subject, identified as Adrian L. Perry (36) from Bells, TN is being held in the Franklin County Jail and is charged with Attempted First Degree Murder, Aggravated Battery X2, Vehicular Hijacking, Attempted Vehicular Hijacking, and Criminal Damage to Govt. Supported Property.
On today's date a Pre-Trial Detention Hearing was held and based on the charges and other qualifying factors pretrial release was denied. As a result, Perry will continue to be detained in the Franklin County Jail.
I'm thankful and appreciative for the many Municipal Officers from throughout Franklin County who responded to assist. They included the Benton Police Department, West City Police Department, West Frankfort Police Department, Christopher Police Department, Zeigler Police Department and Abbott EMS. I ask for continued prayers for the injured Deputy as well as the many Officers in our communities and thousands across our nation who serve each day.
