At CCS Hospice, we stand alongside those who are facing breast cancer—with compassion, dignity, and support. For patients and families walking this journey, hospice care provides comfort, pain management, and emotional support during life’s most challenging times.

Breast cancer awareness is not just about early detection—it’s also about ensuring that those in advanced stages receive the care, love, and peace they deserve.

This month, we continue to honor the fighters, remember the loved ones we’ve lost, and stand strong with families who need us.

Together, we can raise awareness, offer comfort, and remind each person that they are never alone.

Preparing for the Seasons of Life: Advance Care Planning in the Fall
As the leaves change colors and the air turns crisp, fall reminds us that change is an inevitable part of life. It's a season of reflection and preparation, making it the perfect time to engage in a vital aspect of personal planning: advance care planning. Just as we prepare our homes and wardrobes for the coming winter, we should also prepare for the seasons of life, and this begins with understanding and documenting your healthcare wishes.

The Significance of Advance Care Planning
Advance care planning involves thinking ahead and making decisions about your medical care, should you ever become unable to communicate your wishes. This process allows you to:

Maintain Control: By making your healthcare preferences known, you maintain control over your medical treatment even when you can't actively participate in decisions.
Alleviate Family Stress: Clear, documented instructions help your loved ones avoid the anguish of making challenging decisions on your behalf.
Ensure Dignified Care: Advance care planning ensures that your values and preferences are respected, leading to a dignified end-of-life experience.

Why Fall Is the Ideal Time
Fall naturally prompts introspection as we witness the cycle of life and death in the changing leaves. It encourages us to contemplate our own mortality and what kind of care we'd prefer in critical health situations.

Fall also often brings families together for Thanksgiving and other holidays. This is an excellent time to initiate discussions about your healthcare preferences, fostering a supportive environment for open dialogue. By avoiding the sweltering heat of summer or the rush of the holiday season, fall offers a more relaxed atmosphere to engage in thoughtful discussions about your medical care choices.

How to Begin Advance Care Planning
By taking the initiative to document your healthcare wishes, you ensure that your values and preferences are respected in critical medical situations. On your own or as a family, you can walk through the following steps:

Self-Reflection: Start by considering your values, beliefs, and the kind of medical care you'd want in various scenarios. Think about your preferences for life-sustaining treatments, pain management, and hospice care.
Initiate Conversations: Talk to your family, close friends, and healthcare providers about your advance care planning. Open and honest discussions are essential to ensure everyone understands your wishes.
Choose a Healthcare Proxy: Designate a trusted person as your healthcare proxy, someone who can make medical decisions on your behalf if you cannot.
Document Your Wishes: Create an advance directive or living will, which outlines your preferences regarding medical treatment. Ensure this document is accessible to healthcare providers and your loved ones when needed.
Review and Update: Just as the seasons change, your healthcare preferences may evolve. Periodically review and update your advance care planning documents to ensure they align with your current beliefs.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time to create awareness, honour the millions of lives affected by breast cancer and reaffirm our global commitment to equitable access to care and improved survival for all. This year, we highlight the theme: Every Story is Unique, Every Journey Matters.

Why this theme?
Every breast cancer diagnosis is personal. Behind every diagnosis is a story — of courage, resilience, and hope. This theme reminds us that breast cancer touches the lives of women and their families around the world differently, and that every journey deserves compassion, dignity, and support. This year’s theme recognizes the diversity of experiences and reinforces the need for compassionate, timely and quality care for all—regardless of geography, income or background.
