CALLING ALL CENTRAL OHIO MENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONALS...

I’d love to personally invite you to an upcoming Central Ohio Counseling Association (COCA) Friday Night Meetup!

This is not your typical consultation event—no notes, no CEUs, just connection. COCA will provide the appetizers and the good company. It’s a chance to relax, enjoy great food, and spend time with other counselors in a non-clinical setting where you can bring all of yourself to the table.

This Friday, September 12th at 6:00 PM at Budd Dairy Hall

We’ll be meeting upstairs at Simons Bar on the 2nd floor of Budd Dairy Hall. Just come in through the front entrance and head up to the second floor, where you’ll find us. We usually try to take over the main table, so look for the group of counselors gathered there.

Maybe you’re looking for new referral sources. Maybe you just want to be around people who “get it.” Either way, this is for you! Feel free to bring a friend, spouse, or colleague along—we’d love to see some new faces in the mix.

No cost, no registration required—just show up and enjoy.

We're hoping that you too will be able to join us!

Sincerely,
Kaela Vance, LPCCS

When grief knocks you to your knees, grace is already there waiting. 💧🕊️
The healing process often begins in the very space where everything feels broken, and yet something sacred meets you in that emptiness.

Today I am reading "Gravity Is Bringing Me Down" by Wendelin Van Draanen.

This beautifully written story follows a young girl who feels weighed down by all the challenges and frustrations in her life, only to discover new ways of looking at those struggles and finding strength in herself. It’s a playful yet thoughtful exploration of resilience, perspective, and the ability to reframe difficulties into opportunities for growth — themes that connect closely to the mental health work we all do in learning how to manage stress, emotions, and self-talk. In this week’s Therapy Book Thursday, I’ll be sharing this book and reflecting on how its message can help children and adults alike recognize that even when life feels heavy, there are always tools and perspectives that can help us rise above.

In this milestone 101st episode of the Cultivate Calmness Podcast, I take a moment to reflect on what it means to have been sharing conversations, insights, and stories for over two years. What began as a way to connect and share mental health knowledge has grown into a platform for community, interviews, and holistic discussions around grief, trauma, and functional wellness. From solo reflections to engaging dialogues with fellow professionals, this journey has reshaped not only my practice but also the way I approach therapy and life. Join me as I look back on the path so far, the lessons learned, and the vision for what’s to come in the next 101 episodes.

Today I am reading "Stanley's Secret" by John Sullivan and Zach Manbeck.

This heartwarming story follows Stanley, a quiet boy with an extraordinary hidden talent that he keeps to himself. Through a gentle narrative and vibrant illustrations, readers are invited into Stanley’s world where courage, self-expression, and the power of sharing your true self come to life. In today’s Therapy Book Thursday livestream, we’ll explore how this story can open conversations with children about overcoming fears, embracing their gifts, and finding confidence in who they are. We’ll also connect Stanley’s journey to the mental health themes of self-worth, resilience, and the importance of safe spaces for expression.
