A recent trial by Saarland University in Germany found that Azelastine, an over-the-counter nasal spray used for allergies, reduced COVID-19 infections by two-thirds compared to a placebo. Over eight weeks, only 2.2% of participants using the spray contracted the virus, versus 6.7% in the control group. The spray also lowered symptomatic infections, respiratory illnesses, and even common cold cases, suggesting broader antiviral potential.

Azelastine works by blocking viral replication and directly targeting the upper airways, where most infections start. Already approved and widely available for hay fever, it offers a familiar and accessible method to potentially reduce viral infections, though further research is needed before it can be officially recommended as a preventive for COVID-19.

The findings, published in JAMA Internal Medicine, highlight a promising, easy-to-use approach for protecting high-risk individuals and encourage larger trials to explore the full benefits of nasal antiviral therapies.

Good morning, IFM!
Cold and flu season this year is brutal! We are always striving to help you remain at your healthiest. In addition to the regular preventative measures like frequent hand-washing, avoiding large groups/travel when possible, covering your mouth and nose if you feel poorly, and sneezing/coughing into your elbow- we have created an "Immune-Booster Kit" to help support your wellness. This kit has 2 main items: Azelastine spray and Viracid. We have put together a limited number of these bundles at a reduced price for our patients. These will be available starting tomorrow.
