๐๐ผ๐ฟ๐๐ฒ ๐ผ๐ณ ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐ช๐ฒ๐ฒ๐ธ: Oliver ๐โฃ
โฃ
Meet Oliver! This handsome guy is a newer patient for chiropractic and acupuncture. Oliver was struggling with ataxia and a drifting hind end when he was walking. With a diligent owner, care team, and some TLC - he is gaining back his strength. His owner recently shared with us that he is being feisty in the pasture and is increasing the time he wants to stay outside! He also really likes to watch us from his stall when we refill the cookie jar (he knows Desiree will sneak him some cookies!) ๐ซถ๐ป

Fun Fact Friday!
Acupuncture needles are small needles inserted in specific areas of the skin to produce a neurological response. The ones like in this video are silicone coated so the slide in easily and come out easily. But did you know the fascia (connective web structure) under the skin grabs the needles and increases the neural conductivity. In addition, in areas where there is less movement and more tension there can be more fascia laid down.
When we put the needles in the fascia can wrap around it and get stuck. In a small number of horses, the needles can get sucked further in the skin. For this reason, you should always use a licensed veterinarian for your acupuncture treatment, as they have the tools and ability to remove needles in the rare event they get stuck.
This horse below has some neck soreness with added fascial restrictions in the neck area. Most horses have loose skin around their neck that allows needles to slide in and out easily.

Tuesday Tip: Take a Lesson!
Lessons are not just for kids! While it is easy to get caught up in fixing all your horsesโ imperfections, donโt forget to check in on yourself every once and a while. We donโt mean just pick apart every tiny thing you could be doing wrong but spend some time thinking about your own personal injuries and imbalances. Do you have one shoulder higher? Do you have previous ankle injury that makes it harder to sink into that side? Do you have knee or back pain that makes you sit to one side?
We already know that rider balance is essential to horseโs back health and improving their athletic ability, so how are you contributing to this balance. It can be hard to know your own faults and asymmetries, so take a lesson to focus on you as rider!
If you are aware of some of your own issues, are there exercises you can do outside of riding to help strengthen and balance yourself? We all know riding is a mental game, but every rider is an athlete and needs to give themselves the same attention as their horse. You are a team and influence each other. So take some time to work on yourself!

TGIF:
The warmer weather return with the flies! Sox hates the flies more than most but at almost 30 years old he has earned the right to be pampered. We want to see your horses turnout look! Is it completely covered or โau naturelโ? Fly boots on all 4 or just the front?
When youโre prepping for a clinic or show, itโs easy to think every ride needs to push forward. But hereโs the truth - progress isnโt made by going hard every day.
Just like us, horses can get delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) a day or two after tough workouts. That soreness is actually a sign their muscles are repairing and getting stronger. If we keep pushing while those muscles are still fatigued, we risk strain and injury instead of building lasting strength.
โจ The Power of Rest:
๐Rotate intensity - donโt do back-to-back hard days.
๐Give 1โ2 full rest days each week (pasture time and hand-walks still count!).
๐Light days after heavy workouts help prevent soreness and injuries.
Think of rest days as part of the training program - not a step back. Theyโre what allow your horse to come back stronger, more comfortable, and ready to shine in the arena.

Meet Casino! This handsome Saddlebred is proving that age is just a number! In May 2024, Casino had a 6.5lb enterolith removed. Enteroliths are mineral accumulations around a foreign object that can cause an obstruction within the GI tract resulting in colic. For Casino, his enterolith was caused by a shoeing nail! Turning Point Vet has been with Casino since he came home from surgery. We are so proud of how far he has come in his recovery journey! Oh, and we forgot to mention, Casino is 29 years young! ๐

Dr. Michelle Bucci started Turning Point Integrative Veterinary Care to provide mobile acupuncture services to small and large animals to Dayton and surrounding areas. After working as an equine and small animal practitioner she became a certified veterinary medical acupuncturist in order to help improve the lives of pets with minimally invasive techniques.
Acupuncture is a growing field that uses the placement of small needles to stimulate the bodyโs own nervous, musculoskeletal, and immune system to produce a positive response. While Traditional Chinese Medicine relies on the movement of energy. Turning Point strives to use acupuncture as an adjunct to western medicine with a focus on treating a specific medial diagnosis. Through the safe, painless insertion of needles we can to treat a multitude of diseases. Thus far, acupuncture has shown to aid in the treatment of: acute and chronic pain, neurological and muscular diseases, immune disorders, and reproductive issues. It is important to understand that while acupuncture has been show to treat many disorders, it is not a quick fix and does not cure all disorders. Acupuncture does not cure cancer but can help with secondary pain associated with chronic issues.
In 2019, we have been able to add chiropractic care to the practice. All animals can benefit from restoring motion to areas that are stiff and โstuckโ. It has been amazing to watch the improvements in many animals after just a couple adjustments.
It is our mission at Turning Point to provide complete compassionate care for all animals. We provide mobile veterinary acupuncture and chiropractic service to large and small animals. Most pets are more comfortable and calm in their own home or barn and allows for the patient to be treated in a stress free environment. The initial exam is extensive and will include a physical exam, neurological exam, lameness exam, and myofascial palpation exam. Turning Point is a mobile practice but does not have capabilities to do advance diagnostic imaging (ie. X-rays or ultrasound). There may be time that we will recommend further diagnostics at your regular veterinarianโs clinic.
We would be happy to answer any further questions or make an appointment buy phone or email.
