And finally, the last in our series on breathing!

Here is a simple breathing exercise to help calm you!

*To begin, sit up tall and root your sitting bones down in a comfortable chair. Close your eyes and begin breathing through your nose.
*Inhale for a count of 2. Hold the breath in for a count of one. Then exhale gently, counting out for four. Finish by holding your breath out for a count of one. Repeat, keeping your breath even and smooth.
*If the 2-4 count feels too short, try increasing the breath lengths to 4 in and 6 out, or 6 in and 8 out, and so on.
*If the longer breaths create any anxiety, there is no need to push yourself. The most important thing is that the exhale is longer than the inhale, not the absolute length of the breath.

Set a timer and breathe this way for at least 5 minutes.

Not all breaths are created equal!

A simple breathing exercise for calming both the nervous system and the mind is a timed breath, where the exhale is longer than the inhale.

When your exhale is even a few counts longer than your inhale, the vagus nerve (running from the neck down through the diaphragm) sends a signal to your brain to turn up your parasympathetic (rest and digest) nervous system and turns down your sympathetic nervous system (fight or flight).

Simply try to make your exhales longer than your inhales and see how you feel!

Let's chat more about breathing!

Breathing air deep into the lungs is healthy in all respects. When the lungs are filled with air from the bottom up, they compress, giving a gentle massage to the heart. As the diaphragm contracts and relaxes, it also massages the liver and pancreas, and helps the functioning of the spleen, stomach, small intestine, and abdomen.

If you practice rhythmic diaphragmatic breathing 10 times a day for 2 months, while gradually increasing the length of the inhale and exhale, the body will experience a sense of deep relaxation and rest.

It will calm your nerves and manifest an overall calmness--just by breathing!
