Mental Health America of Dubuque County

Mental Health America of Dubuque County We work to ensure the mental health of the Dubuque community through education, advocacy and collaboration.

Whether or not we have a mental illness or know someone who has experienced such a problem we all have mental health. We may not think much about mental health or even use the phrase but itโ€™s a common element in all our lives. Some of us call it a state of mind , being content, or feeling good about yourself. Mental health is perhaps best explained as how we cope with daily life and the challenges it brings. When our mental health is good we can deal better with what comes our way.

To protect your health when temperatures are extremely low and winds are high, dress warmly and in layers.

- Inner Layer: Wear fabrics that will hold more body heat and donโ€™t absorb moisture. Wool, silk, or polypropylene will hold more body heat than cotton.
- Insulation Layer: An insulation layer will help you retain heat by trapping air close to your body. Natural fibers, like wool, goose down, or a fleece work best.
- Outer Layer: The outermost layer helps protect you from wind, rain, and snow. It should be tightly woven, and preferably water and wind resistant, to reduce loss of body heat.

Additional Tips:
- Stay dry โ€” wet clothing chills the body quickly.
- Excessive sweating will cause your body to lose more heat, so remove extra layers of clothing whenever you feel too warm.
- Avoid getting gasoline or alcohol on your skin while de-icing and fueling your car or using a snow blower. Getting these materials on your skin will cause your body to lose a lot more heat.
- Do not ignore shivering โ€” itโ€™s an important first sign that your body is losing heat. Constant shivering is a sign that it is time to go inside.
- If you have asthma, breathing in cold, dry air can trigger an asthma attack.
- Check your smoke/carbon monoxide (CO) detectors. The danger of CO poisoning is greater during winter storms when doors and windows stay closed, and fireplaces and gas heaters are in use. You can also be exposed to deadly CO levels when โ€œwarming upโ€ your car in the garage or when snow covers your tailpipe.
- Have a winter survival kit in your car if you must travel.
- Be a good neighbor. Check on family, friends, and neighbors, especially the elderly, those who live alone, those with medical conditions, and those who may need extra help.
- NEVER leave people or pets alone in a closed car/automobile.

It is officially 2026! ๐ŸŒŸ

While the world screams "New Year, New You," we want to offer a different message: You are enough just as you are.

January can bring a lot of pressure to set big goals, fix "flaws," and hit the ground running. But if you are feeling tired, overwhelmed, or just need a slow start, that is okay. Mental wellness isn't a sprint; it's a marathon.

Our wish for you this year:
โœจ More boundaries that protect your peace
โœจ More moments of connection with safe people
โœจ More grace for yourself on the hard days

We are here for you every step of the way. Hereโ€™s to a gentle, healthy 2026!
