Saint Ann's Residence

Saint Ann's Residence St. Ann's is a non-denominational assisted living facility, in the Center City neighborhood of Duluth, that has been providing services for 63 years.

Many of our customers come to us with little or no assets. Sometimes they don't have the available funds for a deposit fee, or enough social security or retirement funds to afford even our lowest-priced room. Our organization strives to work with each individual’s unique situation, utilizing all resources, to facilitate their admittance for residency. As a non-profit organization, we:
• Offer adjusted or reduced rent for those in need
• Accept HUD rental subsidies
• Waive admission fees, if necessary
• Assist those in need of healthcare services through the Elderly Waiver program. This program is a governmental, subsidized program that does not reimburse our organization for 100% of the cost of the individual's care. Unlike other senior facilities, we have no caps on the number of residents admitted under this program.

Whether it’s holiday celebrations, craft sessions, or excursions in the St. Ann’s bus, we strive to go the extra mile so our residents can lead healthy, active, full lives. Our wonderful volunteers curate our library, cashier and stock our gift shop, and cultivate our gardens. Our dedicated staff pour their heart into our organization, baking, cleaning, and caring for our residents, and strengthening our community. Every donation to us makes a huge impact!

As a non-profit organization, we:

“We had a resident who loved knitting hats. She had a carefully curated collection of hats that she was very particular about. When we had our craft sale, I helped at her booth. The hats had to be displayed just so, with colors and sizes and quantities organized in a particular order. At the end everything had to be boxed back up in the same exact way. She was a bit eccentric and not everyone’s cup of tea. But we really got along and I was honored that she trusted me to help her. A little patience can help you see the real person behind a gruff exterior that’s been created by a challenging life. “ - Saint Ann’s Volunteer

Spending time with our residents is the most enjoyable part of our jobs! Adequate staffing allows us more quality time to spend with them, creating memorable moments and meaningful interactions. Your donations help us do that!

“One new resident seemed a bit apprehensive about leaving her home to move to Saint Ann’s. Shortly after she arrived, we had our fancy, spring dance. She came and danced the night away! It brought her so much joy and she couldn’t wait to tell her family! She was delighted to be at St. Ann’s since she never would have had that opportunity at home. From there on out, she was game for anything!” -Former Staff

"I support St Ann’s Residence throughout the year and especially during the GiveMN campaign. My parents, Woody and Josie Gray, who were in their 80s, reluctantly left their beloved Iron Range home of 40+ years due to failing health. After carefully investigating all senior housing options in the Duluth-Superior area, my family moved my parents into St Ann’s Residence. After a brief adjustment period, Dad and Mom were comfortably at home at St Ann’s, visiting with other couples, enjoying bingo, music events, and holiday parties. With the Essentia Health System only one block away from St Ann’s, Dad and Mom had ready access to comprehensive healthcare whenever needed. Though Dad and Mom have both passed, I will always be grateful to St Ann’s for providing my parents with the services and socialization they needed in a pleasant setting until they passed. “Resident, Father Doyle, asked me to return a bathroom shelf that wasn’t right for his apartment. He gave me an idea of what would work better, so I could keep an eye out for something better while one of our bus shopping outings. The one I brought him ended up being the perfect shelf and he was always reminding me how much he appreciated that shelf. Something so small can sure make a huge impact.” -Volunteer

At Saint Ann’s we strive to keep our rental rates affordable, because every one deserves to have access to housing if they’re unable to live independently. But more than that, Saint Ann’s is a special community of dedicated, caring staff. This is evident in the Saint Ann’s Moments that happen every day, that our staff and volunteers carry with them, even when they retire or move on. Today you’ll hear some of these Moments in their own words.

“Our Spring and New Year's Eve dances were always special occasions. We would set up a disco ball, hire a swing band, serve some tasty hors d'oeuvres and desserts, and even have a delectable chocolate fountain. Staff members would join in throughout the evening, taking a well-deserved break from their responsibilities. One of the nursing staff members would invite every single female resident to dance with him. His charming nature enabled him to encourage even the most reluctant ladies to get up and boogie!” - Former Staff Member
