Zen Eye Care

Zen Eye Care Zen Eye Care is your neighborhood eye care practice where first time patients become lifetime friend Doctor Eric J. Bohjanen (aka Dr. B) grew up in Da U.P.
(220)

doing Yooper things, becoming well versed in the outdoor arts. He then wandered down to Ann Arbor, Michigan to become a University of Michigan Wolverine. There, he met Eastern Michigan University Eagle, Donald L. Quada (aka DQ). Each would venture out into the world to find their own niche and develop unique skill sets. B made his way out to Oregon to procure a Doctor of Optometry distinction, thus transforming into Dr. B. He used his powers for good in clinical settings in Arizona and California before settling down in Colorado to learn new outdoor skills of extreme skiing, rock climbing and mountain biking. During his decade there he honed his craft and built a very impressive clinical resume that will aid every patient he sees. In addition to that, he got hitched to a Minnesotan beauty and she stole him from Colorado for good by convincing him that Lake Superior was where he was from. . . and dog gone it. . . Lake Superior is where he should be. Meanwhile, DQ moseyed on over to the windy city of Chicago and continued his foray into the world of opticianry while dabbling in digital media and rock trombone. Demand for his skills took him to San Francisco (sometimes called the Duluth of the West) for a spell where he explored the breathtaking natural beauty of Big Sur and the majestic redwoods. Longing for the lakes and seasons of the Midwest, he returned to Chicago to ply his craft and raise a clowder of cats until, tapping into his longing for the great outdoors, Dr. B lured him to Duluth with smoked fish, craft beers and promises of grand adventure. He was hooked. In much the same manner that peanut butter met jelly to form one of the most ubiquitous sandwiches in history, Dr. B and DQ formed Zen Eye Care to anchor their talents in the amazing City of Duluth.

“. . .and when the Lake beckons . . .how will you answer the call?”

Now, Dr. B and DQ answer that every day of their lives. And Duluth is their home.

Howdy friends! It’s been a while, but we’re excited to share the news of our first pop-up shop in almost 6 years. Saturday and Sunday, December 13 & 14, we’ll be hosting Erin and Katee from Raw Materials as they transform the Zen space into an apparel making emporium. Apparel fabrics, notions, patterns, books and studio vibes will all be available. Hope to see you there!

20ish years ago, Dr. B and DQ worked together at a mall optical shop in Ann Arbor, Mi. Flash forward 15 years and they reunited to build Zen Eye Care on the North Shore of Lake Superior. 5 years and a global pandemic later, we’re still excited and grateful to be a part of such an amazing community. Thanks for the first five years and here’s to the next five. Cheers!

Howdy, Friends!
It’s been quite a year (or 10?), but we’re going to see this thing through to the end. Following the CDC and St. Louis County recommendations, we’re requiring masks beginning Wed. Aug. 4th in the Zen space to protect our community from the highly contagious Delta variant. Thanks for your patience and perseverance through These Uncertain Times.

Scribbled this in my notebook in 2003 while sitting in a lecture while trying to become an Optometrist. Just found it. I forgot about this dream for awhile. It was dormant. It would not have looked the same had it happened right out of school. The idea evolved through experience. And combining great minds made it even better than I could have imagined on my own.

I thank Don Quada for his unique vision, unmatched talents, and strong work ethic along the way. I thank Sonja Martin for her spirit, attention to detail and infectious attitude. I thank my wife Jessica Cook for her patience, understanding, financial support and encouragement. And I thank Duluth for your support, inspiration, awesome local business community and willingness to be new. We will continue to give back for all that you have done for us. Being grateful = happiness. Cheers! - Eric J Bohjanen OD

On June 19, 1865, Union General Gordon Granger led thousands of federal troops to Galveston, Texas to announce that the Civil War had ended, and slaves had been freed.
Today, we celebrate the end of slavery in the United States while acknowledging that there is plenty of work yet to be done.
In honor of Juneteenth, Zen is donating to the Duluth NAACP to support their work in our community.

Good News!

The latest executive order issued by Governor Walz allows optometry clinics to resume routine exams beginning Monday, May 11th.

We’ll be available by appointment from 12:00 to 5:00, Monday through Friday. We’ll be spacing out our exams to allow us time to disinfect the office and equipment between patients and offering curbside assistance for picking up eyeglasses, repairs and adjustments.

A full rundown of our Covid-19 policies can be found on our website.

We hope to see you soon!

Howdy, Friends!

Welcome to the umpteenth draft of this message that has evolved over the course of the last few days.

The CDC recommends postponing all non-urgent and elective medical visits, including routine eye exams. That’s good enough for us.

We will be closed to the public Saturday, March 21st through the end of the month, at which time we’ll asses the current situation and CDC guidelines.

*IMPORTANT*
Though we will be closed to the public, we will be available for urgent and emergency situations.

One of the greatest concerns ahead is the possibility of patients overwhelming hospitals and urgent care clinics. Dr. Bohjanen is expert at taking care of minor eye emergencies. Sudden loss of vision, scratched corneas, eye infections, foreign bodies; pretty much anything that doesn’t require surgery. We can decide over the phone or via email whether to bring you in for further testing or to continue via telemedicine.

Same goes for your vision devices. If your glasses are lost, broken, eaten by your dog (again), let us know. We’ll figure something out. Running out of contacts? You can order them on our website. Just scroll down on our front page and look for ORDER CONTACTS! under HELPFUL BUTTONS (so helpful!). Or again, just call or email.

We wish you all good health and a heart full of kindness.
We’re all a little stressed right now, but we’ve got each other.
Summer will be here before you know it.

We’re loving our new plant walls! Thanks Duluth Living Walls!
