As we begin the new school year, we ask all drivers to please remember the rules of the road when encountering school buses, bus stops and school zones:

If you see a school bus with yellow flashing lights on, that means it’s slowing down and so should you.

If you see a school bus with red flashing lights, it has stopped and so must you!

Wait until school bus red lights have stopped flashing and all children and other pedestrians are out of the roadway before you resume driving.

Do not pass a stopped school bus! You must stop whether you are behind the bus or on the opposite side of the road. The only exception is if you are on the opposite side of a divided highway (divided by at least five feet of unpaved space and/or a raised barrier), then you may continue driving, but proceeding with caution – see the graphic to better understand the law. Not only is the risk to others great when you violate this law – so is the fine! Addy’s Law, which went into effect this year, imposes an increased fine of at least $1,000 for first-time violators and potential prison time of as much as a year.

Slow down as you pass a bus stop where children are waiting – children might dart into traffic when they see the approaching bus, and drivers are responsible for being aware and yielding to anyone crossing the street.

Slow down as you approach schools and follow the posted school zone speed limits.

Traffic will be heavy around all schools for the first several days of school as higher numbers of parents initially drop their children off at school before beginning to use our buses. A map of our school sites and our start and end times are posted here so you can plan to avoid the traffic: https://www.cherokeek12.net/schools

Local law enforcement agencies will have an extra presence around all our schools during our first days to support our CCSD Police Department officers and Cherokee Sheriff’s Office crossing guards.

Thank you to the Cherokee Sheriff’s Office for its dedicated crossing guards who keep the roads around our schools safe for everyone!

Sunscreen can help protect the skin from sunburn and some skin cancers but only if used correctly. Keep in mind that sunscreen should be used for sun protection, not as a reason to stay in the sun longer.

High immunization rates are important to maintain herd immunity. Herd immunity helps reduce the spread of certain diseases and viruses and helps protect those that are more vulnerable such as babies and immunocompromised individuals. See the recommended 2023 immunization schedule to keep your children up to date.

The American Academy of Pediatrics, in collaboration with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, released the annual immunization schedule for children and adolescents, outlining all the vaccines that are recommended to promote health.

Allergic reactions, hives and nasal allergies can be treated with diphenhydramine, a common "over-the-counter" medicine. Use this chart to figure out the right amount of medicine to give, which should be based on your child's weight (shown in the top row of the chart). Check with your pediatrician to confirm dosage or if you have questions. https://bit.ly/42j8UMO

Tummy time is essential for babies gross motors skills as it helps with getting baby ready for crawling, sitting, and rolling among other things. It also helps with mental development as baby learn to move and be aware of surroundings. In addition, it can help prevent flattening of the head due to baby laying flat in one side for too long. However, tummy time should always be supervised and not allowed for sleep as it can increase the chances of SIDS. See more information and resources about tummy time from CHOA in the link below.

Find out why tummy time is important for babies, from preventing torticollis and head flattening to promoting gross motor skills—plus, how to make tummy time fun.
