🌉May is Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month!🌉

Originally a weeklong celebration in May 1978, AANHPI Heritage Month has been officially recognized since 1990. The 2026 theme, chosen by the Federal Asian Pacific American Council (FAPAC) is “Power in Unity: Strengthening Communities Together.”

They write: ""This year’s theme highlights the importance of leveraging our collective power, telling our stories, and being bridge builders in our communities. The imagery of the bridge in this year’s artwork inspires us to unite in our common causes. Bridges represent many values that are prevalent in AANHPI communities - innovation, resilience, hard work, connection, and a sense of belonging. FAPAC invites you to join us this May to honor the AANHPI leaders who inspire us to work collaboratively and embolden the next generation to build on their legacies.""

For all-ages educational resources, schedules of online and in-person events, and exhibitions celebrating AANHPI Month, go to apac.org/AAPI-Resources or asianpacificheritage.gov

Upcoming Event: Somali Solidarity Day at the Minnesota State Capitol
🗓 May 12, 2026
🕥 12:30 – 1:30 PM
📍 Rotunda, Minnesota State Capitol

From the organizers:

"This is a coordinated, visible stand to make one thing clear: Somali Americans are not alone, and we will not be targeted without response.

Somali Americans are being targeted—clearly, deliberately, and in ways that are escalating. From dehumanizing rhetoric rooted in anti-Black racism to real consequences on the ground, we are seeing a coordinated pattern take shape. This is not isolated. It is a broader effort to label Somali Americans as outsiders and justify exclusion.

Right now, that looks like:
Intensified immigration enforcement targeting Somali families and asylum seekers
Harassment and economic pressure on Somali-owned businesses
Escalating threats against mosques, schools, and community spaces
A growing climate that treats Somali Americans as if they do not belong

We are also seeing the weaponization of “fraud” narratives to criminalize an entire community—part of a long and dangerous history of targeting Black communities to justify surveillance and punishment. What happened with Operation Metro Surge is a warning. Somali Americans are the entry point. It will not stop here if there is no collective response.

Silence in this moment is not neutral. This is why we are organizing."

Today, WHC staff wore denim for alongside PAVSA.

In 1999, Denim Day began after the Italian Supreme Court overturned a sexual assault conviction, claiming the survivor’s jeans were so tight that she must have helped remove them. An argument rooted in harmful victim-blaming.

In response, people around the world began wearing denim as a visible stand against these myths and in solidarity with survivors.

Thank you for inviting us to stand with survivors, PAVSA! We were honored to do so.
