Is your family ready to stay safe and warm as winter settles in? ❄️🧤 The colder months can be especially tough for seniors and adults with special needs, so taking a few extra precautions makes all the difference.

Keep these helpful winter safety tips in mind:
• Layer up with comfortable, warm clothing—loose layers trap heat best.
• Close blinds, curtains, and doors to rooms you aren’t using, helping your home stay cozier.
• In case of a power outage, place towels at the base of doors to keep warmth inside. Make sure to eat regular meals and drink plenty of fluids; good nutrition and hydration keep your body fueled for warmth.
• Be extra careful with space heaters and fireplaces. Always keep anything flammable at least three feet away.
• Watch out for warning signs of hypothermia or frostbite, like shivering, confusion, or numbness—these are signals to warm up right away.

At Bright Path Senior Care Homes of Virginia, we pride ourselves on creating a safe, family-like environment with personalized, non-medical care for each resident. Our homes are designed for comfort and security, especially through the winter chill.

Moving a loved one to assisted living? It’s a big step, but these prep tips ease the worry!
Before the Move:
• Choose right: Tour communities early. Check vibe, staff, cleanliness. Ask questions. Trust your gut!
• Research costs: All-inclusive? Or levels of care? Clarify if rates change.
• Revisit: Tour again, chat with residents, join events/meals.
• Pack smart: Use community help. Prioritize essentials (meds, clothes, bedding). List it out!
• Handle logistics: Cancel utilities/cable, forward mail, update addresses. Track expenses.
Smooth transition starts now!

We all have lapses in memory from time to time, but how do we know the difference between Normal Aging vs Dementia?
There are several ways to tell the difference between normal aging and Dementia. Here are some examples:
1️⃣Names of Friends and Loved ones
Normal aging: You occasionally forget names of friends and relatives
Dementia: Unable to remember names of close friends and relative
2️⃣Recent Events and Conversations
Normal aging: Occasionally forgetting events and appointments
Dementia: Frequently forgetting events and appointments
3️⃣Conversing and communicating
Normal aging: Sometimes you lose track and have difficulty finding words
Dementia: Frequently lose track and pauses when talking to people. Constantly repeats the same things and questions over and over
4️⃣Misplacing things:
Normal aging: You sometimes forget where you left or stored an item.
Dementia: Consistently misplacing items and stores in unusual places.
5️⃣Environment
Normal aging: Comfortable in familiar places/environment.

Dementia: Gets lost in familiar places (example: insists of going home when already home)
It’s always best to consult a physician regarding memory issues and concerns. Your physician can answer your question and can provide you with an official diagnosis.
