Honoring mothers in the day-to-day realness of mothering. May this day be exactly what you need it to be.
...

To those who gave birth this year to a child – we celebrate with you.

To those who lost a child this year – we mourn with you.

To those who are in the trenches with little ones every day and
wear the badge of food stains – we appreciate you.

To those who experienced loss this year through miscarriage,
failed adoptions or running away – we mourn with you.

To those who walk the hard path of infertility, fraught with pokes, prods, tears, and disappointment – we walk with you. Forgive us when we say foolish things. We don’t mean to make this harder than it is for you.

To those single moms who are mothering and showing up every.single.day – we see and honor you.

To those who are foster moms, mentor moms and spiritual moms – we need you.

To those who have lost a partner and are mothering in new territory – we grieve and honor you.

To those who chose to carry life, and then chose another to nurture that life as you watched from afar – we acknowledge your motherhood.

And to those who nurture children they did not grow in their bellies – we see your deep-rooted love for your children.

To those who have warm and close relationships with your children – we celebrate with you.

To those who have disappointment, heartache, and distance with your children – we sit with you.

To those who have lost their mothers – we grieve with you.

To those who experienced abuse at the hands of your own mother – we acknowledge your experience.

To those who lived through driving tests, medical tests, and the overall testing of motherhood – we are better for having you in our midst.

To those who will have emptier nests in the upcoming year – we grieve and rejoice with you.

And to those who are pregnant with new life, both expected and surprising – we anticipate with you.

This Mother’s Day, we walk with you. Mothering is not for the faint of heart, and we have real warriors in our midst.

We remember and honor you.

Everyone goes through changes in their lives, whether it be aging, emotional maturing, retirement, parenthood, or entering or leaving a relationship.

However, some of us seem to embrace change better than others.

When change happens, we may find ourselves wondering how to start over and make the best of the new circumstances we find ourselves in.

Sometimes, what we say and what we mean is completely different.⠀

The words, "I apologize" or "I'm sorry" are often used to mask the deeper truths.⠀

It's okay to take a step back for a few minutes when we start feeling overwhelmed. ⠀

FACT:⠀
Half of all mental health disorders show first signs before a person turns 14 years old, and three quarters of mental health disorders begin before age 24.⠀

Unfortunately, less than 20% of children and adolescents with diagnosable mental health problems receive the treatment they need. ⠀

It can be difficult to know if there is something upsetting a child or young person, but there are ways to spot when something's wrong. Look out for:⠀

• Significant changes in behavior⠀
• On-going difficulty sleeping⠀
• Withdrawing from social situations⠀
• Not wanting to do things they usually like⠀
• Self-harm or neglecting themselves⠀

Remember, everyone feels low, angry or anxious at times. But when these changes last for a long time or are significantly affecting them, it might be time to get professional help.⠀

Early mental health support can help a child before problems interfere with other developmental needs. ⠀

Living awake and on purpose means embracing the dark and the light; owning that life doesn’t have to be perfect, or easy, to be beautiful. ⠀

If we’re going to show up fully to our imperfect and beautiful lives – with joy and on purpose – we will need to do hard things.⠀

Life. ⠀

It’s messy, complex, sometimes raw and deeply challenging. ⠀

And worth living. ⠀

And beautiful. ⠀

And meaningful.⠀

I can do hard things. ⠀

You can do hard things.⠀

We can do hard things.⠀

You are the sum of your experiences.

Not the remainder of the pieces that are left. ⠀

Although being intentional and reminding yourself of this may be difficult in the beginning, learning to make this thought process a part of your journey can be life-changing.⠀

Adjusting to change can be difficult, as even positive life transitions tend to cause us some stress!

Other major life transitions such as moving, retirement, or entering the “empty nest” phase of life may also cause a significant amount of stress.

Change can also make clear what is important in one's life and allow for greater self-discovery and self-awareness. There is no particular treatment for adjusting to change, but several different tactics may be helpful. ⠀

Processing and talking through life transitions with a therapist (i.e., marriage, the death of a family member, the loss of a job, or the approach of middle age) can be helpful.⠀

Therapists have been sharing their work publicly for ages.⠀

They’ve been writing self-help books, teaching classes, creating seminars, going on podcasts, writing advice columns for newspapers and magazines, publishing tools and widely-available information with the intention of bringing insight and understanding to the public. ⠀

Therapists are now using Instagram to do the same thing.⠀

The idea that therapy and therapists need to stay behind office walls, remain private, and stay small and quiet is old-fashioned and no longer relevant for everyone in our current climate or population.⠀

While it absolutely works for some, others are seeking more modern and relatable approaches.⠀

Further, the idea that therapy is only for people who are in deep pain or suffering is also continuing the stigma of therapy and the narrow idea of what and who therapy is for. ⠀

The truth is that therapy is for everyone.⠀

And while Instagram is not therapy, it’s another resource to remove the stigma and get you the personalized care you desire and may need⠀

“…I really have nothing to offer.”
“…I feel worthless.”
“…I’m unlovable.”
“…I can’t see why anyone would want to marry me.”

Low self-esteem means not thinking much of yourself as a person, or not holding yourself in high regard. If you have low self-esteem you might not feel confident or capable, may feel anxious, and may criticize yourself harshly. Some people know that their negative judgement of themselves is too harsh, other people hold onto these beliefs so strongly that they can feel like facts.

What keeps low self-esteem going?
• Speaking to yourself in a critical way.
• Setting inflexible rules about how you should be.
• Making anxious predictions about what might happen.
• Avoidance and safety strategies. (If you think your flaws might be exposed then it makes sense to try to avoid that threat. But you don’t get a chance to learn how well you could have coped.)

Fortunately, there are helpful psychological approaches for improving self-esteem.

Having a supportive and caring therapist to guide you to a more realistic sense of self, as well as encourage and help you to take risks to overcome the grip that low self-esteem can have, is key.

A partnership is healthy. ⠀

Co-dependency is not. ⠀

When your emotions constantly mirror those of your partner, it may be time to re-evaluate your relationship. In its simplest terms, a codependent relationship is when one partner needs the other partner, who in turn, needs to be needed.⠀

Create healthy boundaries of emotional independence.⠀

By creating these boundaries, you allow yourself to show up mentally well and being your best self.⠀
