Mindful eating focuses on your experience when eating. It is eating with intent and being present with your meal. Noticing its texture, smells, and flavors. It encourages you to listen to your body to eat when it is hungry and to stop when you are full. Mindful eating helps not only improve your relationship with food, but also helps with reduction of stress and anxiety and may help with digestion and weight management.

So put down your phone, turn off devices, and use your senses to enjoy and explore your meal. Chew slowly and thoroughly and be patient.

Our world is going through a collective shift, whether it is through climate disasters, political differences/approaches, individual struggles, etc. It’s during this time that we remind each other to look within. Take a moment to meditate. Breathe in each thought and feeling passing through, and let it go as you exhale. There is no perfect way to meditate. So take a moment and silence the noise of the world, and reconnect with your Self.

Kapha Season is here! Late winter and early spring is considered Kapha season, with qualities such as cool, damp, and heavy. These can manifest into things like congestion, mucus, and lacking in energy.

A tip to make it through this season is focusing on practices to help balance Kapha. Practices may include foods that are light and warming to the body, movement such as exercise, and grounding yourself by spending more time outside, in nature.

Masala Chai (Indian Spiced Tea)

Chai! There are literally hundreds of recipes for Indian Spiced Tea (Masala Chai) and each one with its special twist. Here is the way it is prepared outside of the Tilak Ayurved Mahavidyalaya in Pune for the Ayurvedic medical students taking a break between classes.

Quantity: For 2 cups

Ingredients:

1 inch Ginger root

¼ inch Cinnamon stick

¼ tsp. Cardamom powder

1/8 tsp. Ground Nutmeg

4 Cloves (whole)

¼ cup Milk, rice milk or soy milk

1 tsp. Black tea

1 tsp. Honey (stevia, agave)

Procedure: To a small pot add 2 cups of water, all the herbal ingredients and the milk. Do not add the black tea or honey yet. Bring to a gentle boil. Now add the black tea and let the mixture simmer. After letting simmer for 2 to three minutes, depending how strong you want the tea, strain into kettle and serve. Only then add the honey as per requirement into the individual cups. Enjoy!

Variation: Quantities of the ingredients can be adjusted depending upon the strength of the tea desired.

Ayurvedic Acupuncture (Suchi Chikitsa)

Prana is the ultimate primordial force which gives rise to the Five Elements and Three Doshas which regulate all life. Prana flows through the human body through innumerable channels called nadis which connect both to the energy vortices (chakras) within and to the skin superficially. These skin points can be needled in a deliberate sequence according to Ayurvedic principles to create a healing response.

Today known descriptively as suchi chikitsa (“needling therapy”) it was originally and more aptly called bhedan chikitsa (“penetrating therapy”). The intention is to allow the universal prana of the cosmos to pe*****te, through the skin, to the individual’s pranic channels in order to restore balance.

Suchi chikitsa sessions are 30 minutes and require the insertion of approximately 8 to 12 sterile stainless steel or copper needles.

Dis-ease….

Disease occurs when there is a deviation from natural patterns of living for significant periods of time, whether these deviations be physical, mental, or spiritual in nature. These deviations, depending on the specific nature, aggravate one or more of the doshas which then accumulate. The accumulated doshas impede the flow of "universal life force", i.e. prana, and this creates a disruption in normal physiological processes at that site. If this disruption is addressed at an early stage, disease can be averted; if the process is allowed to proceed a disease will manifest. All diseases follow essentially the same course but vary in the doshas involved, the stage of disease, and the site where manifestation occurs. Through knowledge of the principles outlined in this brief overview, Ayurveda gives us the tools to treat disease with appropriate measures at its root.
