The forget-me-not flower symbolizes remembrance in the face of dementia—honoring the memories that remain while grieving those that slowly fade. 🌸💜
This recent trip home to Rhode Island was an emotional one. Both of my parents are living with early onset dementia, and their symptoms have progressed to where they now require full-time care to remain safe. Like so many families navigating this journey, it comes with both heartbreak and moments of unexpected connection.
I’m deeply grateful for my sister, brother, and their families who have been carrying so much of the responsibility over the past few years — especially this last year.
In my work with older adults, I often speak about staying physically, mentally, and socially engaged. Experiencing this personally adds an even deeper layer of understanding and compassion.
The forget-me-not flower is a symbol often associated with memory and remembrance. It feels especially meaningful — honoring who someone has been, while still showing up for who they are becoming.
There is a unique kind of grief in holding both at once. And also, a profound opportunity for presence, patience, and love. 🌸💜
If you or your community are walking this path, you are not alone.
