Thanksgiving Day Prayers

You are my God, I give you thanks;
my God, I offer you praise.
Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good,
his mercy endures forever.
(Psalm 118: 28-29)

Sing to the LORD with thanksgiving;
with the lyre make music to our God,
Who covers the heavens with clouds,
provides rain for the earth, makes grass sprout on the mountains,
Who gives animals their food
and young ravens what they cry for.
(Psalm 147: 7-9)

In recognition of Hospice Month, we have this Employee Spotlight featuring our Volunteer Coordinator, Kellie S.!

How did you get into hospice/healthcare?

I have had the great opportunity to work with the older population throughout most of my career; first as an audiologist and then as a coordinator and director for services that provide assistance in areas such as transportation and companion programs. One program that I coordinated matched seniors with senior Volunteers to provide them with increased socialization and assistance. This led me to becoming interested in helping hospice patients through the Volunteer program.

What do you do for Traditional and what does a typical workday look like to you?

As the Volunteer Coordinator for Traditional Hospice, I recruit, interview, train, and supervise our hospice Volunteers who support our hospice patients and their families. One of the many factors that makes hospice unique in healthcare is its Volunteers, since they are required to be a part of hospice care. Volunteers provide non-medical support and bring a heartfelt energy, love, dedication and compassion that enhances the professional skills of the rest of the patient care team. I look for individuals who are dependable, respectful, patient, caring and who are excellent communicators and good listeners. As Volunteers we provide a unique kind of caring and point of view in hospice care, because we are able to focus on providing patients with social and emotional support. An important part of my job is to match a patient with a volunteer. I meet with the patient/family to determine what their needs are. A Volunteer can provide extra socialization and can sit with a patient to give the family/caregiver the opportunity to attend their own medical appointments, to go shopping, or to just have a much needed break. I accompany the Volunteer to the first visit with a patient and provide ongoing support and training to Volunteers. Volunteers help to brighten and celebrate the holidays and patient birthdays by delivering gifts and goodies to patients and their families. I also train Volunteers to assist in the office to support our hospice staff.

I enjoy my work at Traditional because it is beyond rewarding to be able to support patients with a limited life expectancy. We are here to celebrate the patients, honor their lives, and to provide them with comfort and dignity. The part of my job that I enjoy most is when I have the opportunity to visit with a patient. A visit might look like playing music that the patient enjoys, singing together, playing a game, reading to the patient, writing cards or letters, having a listening ear to hear cherished patient stories, or simply sitting by the patient to hold his/her hand. My job duties and responsibilities vary depending on the day. I am a part of the patient Interdisciplinary Team so when a patient would like a Volunteer, I create a care plan for Volunteer visits and record the visits and times that the Volunteers spend with patients. I like that I am not doing the same thing every day. My administrative duties allow me to be in our Dunmore office daily, and then I am on the road the rest of the time to support the patients and Volunteers.

Why should someone consider getting into hospice care?

Working in hospice care has been the most rewarding position that I have had. I would highly recommend this work to someone who is a very caring person and who wants to make a significant difference at a time in a person's life when compassion and kindness are greatly needed. Hospice care not only helps patients, but you also are able to provide physical, social, and emotional support to their families.

What are your thoughts on working with Traditional?

Traditional is the best healthcare agency to be a part of and has been such a blessing in my life. I
truly enjoy going to work each and every day because of the people there and the great support that they provide to me. I think that those that choose to work in hospice are especially caring individuals which is apparent in the work environment at Traditional. The staff is like family to me.

All Saints’ Day

November 1st is the Feast of All Saints, or All Hallows. It is a day for us to honor all those people who have died and are now enjoying the fullness of life in heaven.

These saints include the popular and well known, like St. Ann and St. Patrick, as well as those who are widely unknown, like a grandparent or personal friend.

The holiday, Halloween, means the Eve of All Hallows, or All Saints, and is therefore celebrated on October 31st. Mostly a secular holiday, it has its roots in the Christian tradition of life after death.

All Souls’ Day is celebrated on November 2nd; a day we pray for all the dead in the hope they will one day join the saints in heaven.

All Saints’ Day Prayer

Almighty God,
Today we honor the saints who walked before us.
May their example inspire us to live with courage, love and grace.
Grant us strength to follow in their footsteps,
So that we too may grow in holiness
And share in Your eternal joy.
