BREAKING: Michael Nagowski will retire this summer after 18 years as chief executive officer of Cape Fear Valley Health (CFVH), which serves Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, Highsmith-Rainey Specialty Hospital, and hospitals in Bladen, Hoke, Harnett, and Johnston counties.

Nagowski, 60, announced his retirement to the 19-member CFVH board of trustees on Friday.

“I’m excited I will get to spend time with my family,” Nagowski told CityView. “It’s with mixed emotions, but I’m excited.”

The executive board of trustees immediately voted to name Dan Weatherly, the health system’s chief operating officer since 2015, as interim CEO, according to a press release.

Today, I’m sharing that I’ve made the decision to retire as CEO of Cape Fear Valley Health.

Since 2008, it has been an honor to serve this organization and our community during a time of tremendous growth and change. Together, we expanded services and facilities, invested in education and workforce development, and continued to strengthen our commitment to the patients, employees and families who rely on us every day.

What I will carry with me most are the people. Through challenges and milestones alike, I’ve been surrounded by dedicated professionals who lead with compassion, accountability and a shared commitment to public service. That steady focus on doing what’s right for our community is what makes Cape Fear Valley Health so special.

I’m deeply grateful for the trust placed in me, the work we’ve accomplished together, and the foundation we’ve built for the future. Thank you to our employees, physicians, partners and community for allowing me to be part of this journey. Serving Cape Fear Valley Health has been the privilege of a lifetime.

This past Friday, Harnett Health Foundation was honored to welcome generous donors Katie and Josh Smith of PHC Restoration for a tour of our new Cancer Center. Their family-owned business has proudly served the North Carolina community for generations, providing storm, fire, and water damage restoration services. Katie and Josh value giving back and are inspired by the incredible work of our Cancer Center team. We are truly grateful for their support of Harnett Healthcare and Harnett Health Foundation.

At Cape Fear Valley Health Foundation, we see the power of kindness every day. Families turn to our health system during some of life’s most vulnerable moments, trusting they will receive compassionate, high-quality care. That care is made possible because people like you in our community choose to show up again and again in ways both seen and unseen. 🩷

This winter, we invite you to consider an unexpected yet meaningful act of kindness: creating or updating your will. Having a plan in place can bring peace of mind for you and clarity for your loved ones, especially during times of uncertainty.

We’ve partnered with FreeWill because their free and secure online resource guides you through making your will in as little as 20 minutes. We also encourage you to use FreeWill to update an existing will because you can easily make changes online whenever you’d like.

If you choose, you’ll also have the option to include a gift to Cape Fear Valley Health Foundation that helps ensure compassionate care, advanced treatments, and community health programs remain available for generations to come.
