Malone Mukwende is a second year medical student from St. George's, University of London, who has produced a resource which shows how clinical signs appear on darker skin. The handbook is called Mind the Gap, developed by Mukwende to help other medics recognise potentially life-threatening diseases on Black and Brown people.⠀

The book contains side-by-side images showing how illnesses appear on light and dark skin, as well as telling doctors language which is appropriate to use with patients.⠀

Speaking to the British Medical Journal, Mr Mukwende said: 'On arrival at medical school I noticed a lack of teaching about darker skin. ‘We were often taught to look for symptoms, such as rashes, in a way that I knew wouldn't appear on my own skin.' ⠀

He added in a statement: 'The booklet addresses many issues that have been further exacerbated during the Covid-19 pandemic, such as families being asked if potential Covid patients are ‘pale’ or if their lips ‘turned blue’.⠀

'These are not useful descriptors for a black patient and, as a result, their care is compromised from the first point of contact. ‘It is essential we begin to educate others so they are aware of such differences and the power of the clinical language we currently use.'
