This is going to be our last month treating patients for addiction disorders. The regulatory issues that keep building, the elimination of the X-waiver, the creation of Colorado Behavioral Health Administration, and my decision to drop Colorado Medicaid forced me to close Colorado Addiction Treatment Services, or CATS.

By dropping Medicaid, I am forbidden to see any patients that have Medicaid, and would be willing to pay cash for a covered treatment. Our last day as a Colorado Medicaid will be on September 1, 2023.

8.012.2.C. Providers are prohibited from collecting, or attempting to collect, payment from recipients for Medicaid covered items or services regardless of whether Medicaid has actually reimbursed the Provider and regardless of whether the Provider is enrolled in the Colorado medical assistance program.

Regional Addiction Specialty Clinic

I started my endeavor into addiction medicine 4 years ago. I had been an Emergency Medicine physician for 25 years, and the frustration of operating within the broken system of addiction treatment, led me to this path. I became Board Certified in Addiction Medicine in 2016, and have been providing addiction treatment full-time. My experiences from the ER, have provided me with the skills to work in this field, as approximately 1/3 of ER visits are addiction related.

The ability to provide Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) for addiction, is the tool that people need to get jump-started to their recovery. Opioid addiction is very different than addictions to stimulants or alcohol. There are specific receptors for the opioid molecule. This allows us to block the receptor, eliminate cravings or the effects of opioid medications. MAT or addiction treatment requires the investment of the patient in order for recovery to be successful. Most people benefit from counseling. About 80-90% of people suffering with the disease of addiction, have a co-occurring disorder. These co-occurring disorders (anxiety, depression, PTSD, ADD/ADHD and others) should be addressed to properly treat addiction.

We are available for assessments weekdays. We have added TELEHEALTH services to expand treatment to our more rural areas. Primary care services are offered, as well as treatment for Hepatitis C.
