Eight Ways to Build Your Immunity this Cold Season!

1. Cover the back of the neck - with a scarf or bandana, in TCM terms, the back of the neck is a very vulnerable place for pathogens to enter and the body to catch a cold. Ever notice a chill to the back resulting in a headache?

2. Reduce your intake of Wheat, Processed Sugar, and Dairy - I know, a tough one. These products contribute to the body's inflammation, reducing natural immunity.

3. Gargle with Salt Water at Night - or a formulated mouth wash with essential oils to prevent bacteria starting in the mouth to get further into the body and prevent throat pain.

4. Stay Hydrated!

5. Drink Warm Water or Drinks with Meals - this supports healthy digestion by supporting the heat needed for digestion.

6. Take Quality Colloidal Silver - If you start to feel not great, this is a great first option for fighting the cold.

7. Take Vitamin C, D, and Zinc Daily - These support your active natural immunity to create an initial defense immunity throughout your day.

8. Jade Wind Screen - (Yu Ping Feng San) is a TCM herbal formula used to PREVENT infections. This is good for prevention of colds, immune defense in cold season, and even great for seasonal allergies year round. This formula builds up immune cells through herbal constituents.

Consult your Doctor with questions prior to the use of these items. Of course, seasonal acupuncture is great to include for your care.

Autumn, the season of metal
As we passed the fall equinox, this season begins our season of the darkness, the yin cycle. This peaks with the winter solstice, and ends at the spring equinox. Autumn is a time for new inspiration, new academic studies, and an increasing awareness of internal processing. Now is a great time to finish projects and manifestations started during the Yang season, take what you have learned, and meditate in Yin season to plant new seeds during the winter season.

In Chinese Five Element theory, the autumn season is governed by the Metal Element, which includes the Lung and Large Intestine organ systems. These elements are associated with communication and the workings of the mind. Clear thinking, openness to new ideas, and while doing so through a relaxed state is the mediation to cultivate during this season. The balance of intake, through inhaling and digestion of both physical food as well as our emotions, and the output of exhaling, physical activity and elimination are crucial to staying healthy to regulate the metal elements.

Two herbals to drink through this season to support the Lungs and Large Intestine
Burdock Root: A tonic, diuretic and an alterative. This has been used for chronic skin disorders such as eczema and acne blemishes, and general Lung health.
Comfrey: This herb is high in protein, vitamins, and minerals and is a soothing expectorant when there is mucus in the system.
Coltsfood: A great Lung tonic, however, most tonics take a longer time period to aid in support, over a one month or three time period. (Perfect for the metal season)

Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine as Primary Care

Acupuncture is an effective form of health care that has evolved over 3000 years into a complete holistic system of medical theory and practice. Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine can be used to treat ailments on their own or in adjunct to western medical care. The main theory of Acupuncture is in promoting the body’s natural ability to heal itself through re-patterning Qi and Body Fluids in the body. This can be used to enhance recuperative power and immunity; support physical, mental, and emotional health; and improve overall function and well-being of the body.

Acupuncture + Modern Science
From the scientific perspective, stimulation of acupuncture points by needles, pressure, adjunct tools, essential oils, and stones causes the release of various body chemicals and hormones that re-pattern the body’s ability to function properly on its own and heal naturally. This influences your body to heal more quickly and even alters how you experience your pain.
Acupuncture is recognized by leading national and international health organizations to be effective for the treatment of a wide variety of ailments, including and not limited to: primary care, reproductive and sexual health, allergies, anxiety, joint and muscle pain, menopause, stress, pregnancy care and support, postoperative pain, various forms of addiction, HIV/ AIDS, hypertension and hypotension, facial pain, diabetes, depression, colds and flu, cancer care and support, autoimmune diseases, asthma, hay fever, headaches, IBS, PTSD, and seasonal affective disorders.
