The vagus nerve is the longest nerve in the body, serving a major role in the parasympathetic nervous system (“rest and digest” system) that connects the brain to the heart, lungs, and digestive tract.
It may be pronounced “Vegas,” like the city, but what happens in the vagus nerve doesn’t stay in the vagus nerve. It regulates essential involuntary functions, including heart rate, digestion, breathing, and immune responses.
