This friend is using a water dropper on a coffee filter - a simple but powerful OT activity to build the hand strength, coordination, and finger isolation needed for future writing skills. You could even say those tiny drops have a big impact!

Our occupational therapists use fun, play-based tasks like this to support fine motor development, laying the groundwork for holding crayons, using scissors, and eventually writing letters ✏️

It may look like play (and it is!) but every squeeze is helping prep those hands for future fine motor skills!

At Emerge Pediatric Therapy, we’re reminded daily of the incredible bonds and relationships created in the therapy environment. Sometimes that bond is between humans and dogs, thanks to the emotional safety and healing support that service dogs provide. Rupert, pictured here, is one of those special dogs who reminds us of that powerful bond! He has worked at both Emerge and UNC Hospitals, supporting children and families through connection, calm, and care.

Today, as we remember the lives lost on September 11th and honor the bravery of first responders and countless heroes who served in the aftermath, we also honor the lives of the loyal service and search-and-rescue dogs, whose courage and devotion brought hope in dark days. 💛

Drop off bottles or cases of water during operating hours in Durham, Cary or Carrboro, and we'll be sure they get delivered to our friends and neighbors in the community who are in need.
