It might surprise you to hear this coming from me because I’m a barefoot massage therapist.

Yes, I can deliver seriously deep pressure thanks to Ashiatsu. šŸ‘£šŸ˜„

But deep work doesn’t imply effective work.

One of the biggest pressure challenges in bodywork is the ā€œgo as deep as you canā€ request. If we’re not careful, we end up chasing intensity instead of results.

Here’s the reframe I love (and use often):

The goal isn’t to go harder — the goal is to create change.

Sometimes ā€œdeeperā€ just makes the body guard, hold its breath, or go into survival mode.

Yes, some clients need you to meet their expectation first so they feel heard. Then, once trust is built, you can guide them toward what works best:

šŸ—£ļø ā€œYou know I can work deep. Let’s explore something different and see how your body responds.ā€

Client-friendly language you can borrow:

āœ… ā€œLet’s aim for effective pressure — deep enough to create change, not so intense your body starts guarding.ā€

āœ… ā€œTell me if this feels productive, deep, or too much. We want effective work without putting you in survival mode.ā€

And for therapists? Barefoot techniques like Ashiatsu can deliver broad, steady pressure without wrecking your hands, wrists, or shoulders.

Meeting pressure expectations safely builds trust, keeps you in control of the session, and creates a better experience. But sometimes, you may see what the client needs more than they do.

A little story time from a recent client.

It’s so important to look at the body as a whole and not just separate parts. If one part of the body is in pain, it often stems from somewhere else.

Also, my favorite client feedback of the week: ā€œIt’s hard to find a good therapist—you need to teach more.ā€ šŸ˜‚ I’m trying!!šŸ™ŒšŸ¼šŸ™šŸ¦¶

Bull City Soles in Durham, NC is hiring… for the right therapist.
I’m looking for a motivated NC Licensed Massage Therapist who wants more than a long-term employee role.

My goal is to mentor the right person into independence inside an established, results-focused practice.

The path looks like:
Employee → skilled barefoot therapist → contractor → room renter.

Most of our clientele seek barefoot massage, so interest in learning ashiatsu is essential. Training is required unless you’re already formally trained (next Fundamentals training opportunity is in May).

Details:
* Starts as an employee position (hourly + session commission) during the training phase
* 2+ years experience preferred (open to the right newer therapist)
* Must live within 30 minutes of Durham
* Strong deep tissue + pain relief focus (therapeutic, outcomes-oriented work)
* Part-time availability: M, T, W, F, S (some evenings required)

If interested, email only with:
Your experience level
Where you’re located
Why this path toward renting appeals to you

With 34 years in the field — including 20 years as a Certified RolferĀ® and 20 years teaching barefoot massage — I’m looking to mentor the right therapist into long-term independence.

Comments of ā€œinterestedā€ will not receive a response. Email: info@bullcitysoles.com

When I explain Ashiatsu to potential clients, I tell them: ā€˜It’s just massage using a different tool – my feet.ā€

If you’ve ever dragged yourself through a day of five or six back-to-back deep tissue sessions, you know the physical toll it takes.

Even with solid body mechanics and years of anatomy training, deep work, it can be brutal on the hands, wrists, and shoulders.

With barefoot massage, I use gravity, leverage, and full-body movement. I can easily perform long fascial holds and provide the deep pressure clients crave, without pain or strain.
