Last year, I signed legislation that permanently expanded North Carolina’s postpartum Medicaid coverage from 60 days to one full year. I am proud we are working on increasing access to care for mothers as we recognize Black Maternal Health Week – because we cannot accept maternal disparities as a fact of life. I look forward to working with Sen. Murdock and the Legislative Black Caucus to make sure that all mothers and their children have access to the health care they need as we continue to build a safer, stronger, and healthier North Carolina.

There’s a sunshine baby, the one who came before the loss and the storm, when life still felt simple and safe.

There’s an angel baby, the one you carry in your heart instead of your arms.

There’s a rainbow baby, the one who comes after loss, carrying hope after heartbreak.

There’s a double rainbow baby, the one who comes after multiple losses, carrying layers of healing, faith, and strength most people will never see.

There’s a golden baby, the one you waited and prayed for, the “maybe it won’t happen” miracle.

There’s a sunset baby, the last baby, the one who closes a chapter you’d live in forever if you could.

I’ll never understand why we can’t record our own ultrasounds.

That’s my baby.
My body.
My money.
And one of the most sacred moments of my life.

But some random policy says I’m not allowed to capture it?

Miss me with that.

Some of us have prayed for that heartbeat.
Some of us won’t get to hear it again.
Some of us have a partner that couldn’t be there.
Some of us are just trying to hold onto something real, because pregnancy isn’t always beautiful.

Let mothers record their ultrasounds.
Not everything needs to be controlled.
Some things just need to be remembered.

I saw two pink lines…
And instead of jumping for joy, my heart whispered, “Please, not another goodbye.”

Pregnancy after loss is complicated.
It’s holding hope in one hand and fear in the other.
It’s wanting to celebrate but being scared to even breathe too deeply.
It’s guarding your heart because you’ve felt the shattering before.

I am pregnant.
And I am grateful.
But I’m also so scared.
Because once you’ve lost a baby, a positive test doesn’t come with pure excitement anymore,
it comes with a quiet prayer: “Please stay.”
