The birth community has suffered a devastating loss.

We honor and grieve Dr. Janell Green Smith, who transitioned due to complications after birth.

As a birthworker, my spirit is shaken and my heart is heavy with sorrow and righteous anger. To lose a woman who stood as a guardian at the threshold of life protecting, advocating, and holding others through birth. while her own life was taken in that same space is a wound that reaches far beyond one family. This is ancestral grief. This is collective pain.

Let us be clear! This is not an isolated tragedy.
Black maternal mortality in America continues to rise because Black women are not believed, not protected, and not treated with the sacredness they deserve. Birth should never be a death sentence. No child should enter this world without their mother because of systemic neglect, medical racism, and silence.

Dr. Green Smith’s transition is a call to action. It is time to reclaim birth as the sacred rite of passage it has always been not something to be survived, feared, or over-medicalized unless truly necessary. It is time to center Black mothers, protect Black lives, and demand accountability.

We say her name.
We honor her work.
We commit to protecting Black mothers with our voices, our hands, our advocacy, and our insistence on justice.

May her spirit be wrapped in light.
May her legacy strengthen our resolve.
May we birth a future where Black women live.

The Golden Hour 💛💫

As a doula, I honor the Golden Hour as sacred ground, the first moments after birth when time softens and the veil feels thin. This is the space where mother and baby meet one another earthside, skin to skin, heart to heart, uninterrupted for the first one to two hours whenever both are well.
In this sacred window, baby is placed tummy to tummy with mama and left undisturbed, allowing instinct and ancestral wisdom to lead. Skin to skin contact awakens oxytocin in both mother and baby the love hormone, the bonding hormone, the hormone of trust, connection, and calm. It supports milk flow, emotional regulation, and deep imprinting between souls who already know one another.
When given time and peace, many newborns will gently make their way to the breast and latch on their own, guided by innate memory and divine design. The Golden Hour is not just a recommendation it is a remembering. A return to how birth has always known itself to be.

In Honor of Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month
October is a month of remembrance, love, and gentle reflection. My heart is with every family who has experienced the loss of a precious baby—whether through miscarriage, stillbirth, or in infancy.
There are no words big enough to hold the weight of that kind of love and grief. Please know that your baby’s life mattered, your love continues to matter, and you are not alone in your healing.
I see your strength. I honor your story. And I hold space for your heart as it finds its way through the waves of loss and love.

I’ll never understand why we can’t record our own ultrasounds.

That’s my baby.
My body.
My money.
And one of the most sacred moments of my life.

But some random policy says I’m not allowed to capture it?

Miss me with that.

Some of us have prayed for that heartbeat.
Some of us won’t get to hear it again.
Some of us have a partner that couldn’t be there.
Some of us are just trying to hold onto something real, because pregnancy isn’t always beautiful.

Let mothers record their ultrasounds.
Not everything needs to be controlled.
Some things just need to be remembered.

I saw two pink lines…
And instead of jumping for joy, my heart whispered, “Please, not another goodbye.”

Pregnancy after loss is complicated.
It’s holding hope in one hand and fear in the other.
It’s wanting to celebrate but being scared to even breathe too deeply.
It’s guarding your heart because you’ve felt the shattering before.

I am pregnant.
And I am grateful.
But I’m also so scared.
Because once you’ve lost a baby, a positive test doesn’t come with pure excitement anymore,
it comes with a quiet prayer: “Please stay.”
