πΈ The Hidden Cost of Weight Loss: Americans Spend Over $12,000 a Year: Trying to lose weight isnβt just hard on your body β itβs hard on your wallet too.
A new survey of 2,000 Americans found that people actively trying to lose weight spent over $12,000 in just one year on everything from special foods and fast food, to new clothes, medical visits, supplements, and repeated diet programs. Researchers are calling it a hidden βweight tax.β
Many respondents said that reaching their goal weight could save them nearly $200 per month, thanks to lower grocery bills, fewer fast-food meals, cheaper clothing, and reduced healthcare costs. Yet most people reported trying (and failing) to lose weight about six times, often cycling through fad diets and quick-fix programs that donβt last β and quietly drain bank accounts.
Beyond money, people said successful weight loss would mean more energy, better sleep, smaller portions, and improved overall health β benefits that go way beyond the scale.
π Weight loss isnβt just about willpower β itβs about sustainability, health, and cost. The real question is: whatβs the long-term approach that actually works?
