In case you missed it! The report with the latest employment numbers for people with and without disabilities is in! Why are there historic highs of labor force participation for people with disabilities? Dr. Hyun Ju Kim reminds us that context matters: “Economic pressures—such as rising prices or lost household income— can push more people into the labor market, even when job growth slows." We’re excited to share that we’re partnering with the American Foundation for the Blind (AFB) this year to bring you new sections in the 2026 Annual Disability Statistics Compendium!

Together, we’re gathering clearer, more meaningful information about people who are blind or have other vision disabilities—especially adults ages 55 and over. These numbers aren’t just data points. They help us understand people’s real experiences, the ways we age, and how we can better support one another in our communities.

This month we celebrate Native American/American Indian (AIAN) heritage. Let's start by looking at where AIAN people with disabilities live! According to the 2022 American Community Survey's 5-Year data, 17% live in rural areas, 19% live in suburban areas, and a majority 64% live in an urban setting. Understanding where different groups of people live can help agencies and advocacy groups know where to focus resources.

For more stats on people with disabilities by geographic location, check out Section 10: Rural of the 2025 Annual Disability Statistics Compendium: https://www.researchondisability.org/annual-disability-statistics-collection/2025-compendium-table-contents/section-10-rural-compendium-2025
This section of the Compendium was made in collaboration with University of Montana's RTC:Rural
