Our recent survey reveals that many practitioners face challenges in diagnosing and managing . Despite The Rome Foundation diagnostic criteria, IBS remains perceived as a diagnosis of exclusion. Key insights include 🧵:
🗝️ Many see as underdiagnosed and challenging to diagnose confidently.
🗝️ While dietary interventions like fiber, low FODMAP, and gluten restriction are considered essential, US are more confident in recommending these than their European counterparts.
🗝️ Both groups demonstrate moderate confidence in prescribing over-the-counter treatments, but referral patterns differ—US are more likely to refer to gastroenterologists.
Despite the Rome Foundation recommendations and criteria to support a positive diagnosis of IBS, most PCPs still rely on exclusionary investigations such as endoscopy and a serologic workup, while a significant percentage suggest referring patients to gastroenterologists.
