November is Diabetes Awareness Month! To bring awareness, we're sharing some of the ways in which regular exercise helps in the management of Diabetes:

1. Regular, moderate intensity exercise helps improve insulin sensitivity.
2. Strength training helps improve one's resting metabolic rate, which can aid in weight management.
3. Exercise acutely increases blood flow and oxygen delivery throughout the body, which can be helpful for stimulating the muscles and nerves to prevent diabetic neuropathy or to manage it for those who are already experiencing symptoms.

There are so many more benefits, but these are just a few. If you want to chat more about these or ask questions, stop by the fitness desk next time you're visiting the Duke Health and Fitness Center!

As we transition into the fall months, the upcoming holidays often increase social gatherings and food-centered events. While these occasions can be joyful, they may also present challenges to maintaining your health and fitness goals.

Here are a few practical tips for practicing mindful eating and making more intentional choices throughout the season to help you stay on track.

1. Eat Slowly: Take time to chew and savor each bite, aiming for 20-30 minutes per meal.
2. Focus on Your Food: Avoid distractions like TV or smartphones to enjoy your meal.
3. Listen to Hunger Cues: Eat when you feel a whisper of hunger, stop when satisfied and eat when you feel a whisper of fullness, not when you are overly full.
4. Appreciate Your Meal: Notice textures, flavors, and aromas, expressing gratitude for your food.
5. Portion Control: Serve reasonable portions to prevent overeating and waste.
6. Practice Mindfulness: Pay attention to how different foods make you feel physically and emotionally.

Hi everyone, my name is Alexander “Alex” Lewis!

With over 23 years of experience in the fitness industry—and nearly six years as Membership Manager at Duke Health and Fitness Center—I bring a deep passion for health, wellness, and community engagement. I hold a Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training and am dedicated to helping individuals improve their overall well-being through meaningful connections and personalized support.

Before joining DHFC, I served as Executive Director for the YMCA of the Sandhills in Fayetteville, NC, and as Assistant Director of Fitness Services at Southeastern Regional Medical Center in my hometown of Lumberton, NC. One of the most unique roles I’ve held was as a production manager for a company that built military training facilities, where I had the honor of meeting members of elite special forces units, including SEAL Team Six.

What I value most about my role at DHFC is the chance to connect with our members and hear how the center has positively impacted their lives. Their stories of resilience and transformation, supported by our dedicated staff, are truly inspiring.

Outside of work, I’m a proud husband and father of three sons. I love spending time with family and friends, exploring new destinations, and embracing life’s adventures. I’m outdoorsy by nature—whether it’s horseback riding, off-roading, hiking, or camping. I’m also an avid golfer, concertgoer, and active church member. Water sports are a big part of my life too; boating, kayaking, jet skis, and white-water rafting.

A few fun facts: I’m a North Carolina native with a love for classic black-and-white films from the 1930s to 1950s. I just recently watched the 1941 classic “Topper Returns” starring Roland Young. I’ve played the cello for over 30 years and used to play bass guitar in a couple of local bands. One of my proudest personal achievements was completing a 30-mile run for my 30th birthday and then a 40-mile run at 40. My next goal? A 50-mile run—still a few years away!

Next time you're at DHFC, feel free to stop by and say hello—I’d love to connect!

Welcome to our new series, Meet the Staff Monday! We're kicking it off with Addisun; continue reading to learn more about her!

Hello! My name is Addisun Myler, and I serve as an Exercise Physiologist at the Duke Health & Fitness Center. I am passionate about engaging with our patients—listening to their stories, understanding their goals, and supporting them on their journey toward improved health and well-being. The welcoming and collaborative environment here truly makes each day rewarding.

I particularly enjoy working alongside our clinical team, where I have the opportunity to measure and monitor vital signs such as blood pressure, heart rate, and oxygen saturation. Witnessing our members make progress and achieve their fitness and health goals is one of the most fulfilling aspects of my role as a healthcare professional.

Outside of work, my hobbies include:
● Watching Netflix shows
● Traveling and exploring new places
● Volunteering with the Special Olympics
● Trying new foods and cuisines
● Exercising and staying active
● Shopping
