The Rice Diet Program was originated by Dr. Walter Kempner in 1939 at Duke University Medical Center. The Program was initially used for the treatment of high blood pressure and kidney disease. It was soon found to be effective in the prevention and treatment of angina pectoris, heart failure, diabetes, hypercholesterolemia and obesity. The early history of the Rice Diet was described by Dr. Barbara Newborg in Walter Kempner and the Rice Diet: Challenging Conventional Wisdom.
Many thousands of readers have been inspired to prevent and reverse their obesity and other chronic diseases by following the guidance from the books shown below, under the supervision of their doctors. You can find them at your local library, bookstore or online.

The Rice Diet Program staff has enjoyed helping our patients to learn about and live a healthier lifestyle. Since late 2012 when the Rice Diet Program closed its’ Durham doors, there have been many requests for ongoing retreats to inspire those who wanted to continue their journey to better health.
Our dietitians led their first retreat in the Great Smoky Mountains of North Carolina last December. It’s success, along with the positive feedback from previous Italian tours have inspired Dr. Robert and Kitty Rosati, Cardiologist, Program Director and Nutrition Director, to plan their next exciting retreat:
“Exploring and Tasting the Backroads of Italy”, November 23-December 1, 2013.
The Rosatis will lead you through unique and memorable adventures, including lunch in an Etruscan cave, and the preparation and tasting of the ultimate pecorino cheese, new olive oil and wine. Join them and experience this wonderful country, rich in its’ heritage of real and optimally fresh food, and relax and enjoy the dolce vita, as they oversee the low-sodium preparation of traditional Italian cuisine, and lead you from experiences as inspiring and varied as visits to a biodynamic farm and a luxurious, mineral-rich thermal spa!
