This interesting study in mice looked at blood in the portal vein - the portal vein connects what is absorbed from the intestines to the liver where it is then sent to the rest of the body. What they found is that the mouse genetics, diet, and antibiotics all affected the compounds being produced by the gut bacteria and some of the compounds are altered by the liver, a standard blood test would never pick them up.

Future research will look at each compound, how they are produced, and what their effect is on both the liver and the rest of the body.

Scientists found that certain molecules made by gut bacteria travel to the liver and help control how the body uses energy. These molecules change depending on diet, genetics, and shifts in the microbiome. Some even improved insulin response in liver cells when tested in the lab. The findings could....

Use of indoor tanning beds almost triples the risk for melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer. This large study showed that a little over 5% of people that used tanning beds developed Melanoma compared to 2.1% of those that did not. Some are arguing that tanning beds should have a warning similar to ci******es' on them the link is so clear.

Researchers discovered that tanning beds cause widespread, mutation-laden DNA damage across almost all skin, explaining the sharply increased melanoma risk. Single-cell genomic analysis revealed dangerous mutations even in sun-protected regions. Survivors’ stories underscore how early tanning habi...

Using AI/Deep Learning researchers found that the volume of the adrenal glands, how big they were, was correlated to perceived levels of stress and negative health outcomes. It may be possible in the near future to see just how much stress is affecting the body with a simple CT scan.

Researchers used a deep learning AI model to uncover the first imaging-based biomarker of chronic stress by measuring adrenal gland volume on routine CT scans. This new metric, the Adrenal Volume Index, correlates strongly with cortisol levels, allostatic load, perceived stress, and even long-term c...

Tea drinkers were shown to have improved bone health and heavy coffee drinkers were shown to have worse bone health in this study of over 10,000 women over the age of 65. Moderate coffee drinking of 1-2 cups didn't seem to have any effect.

It's thought that the catechins in tea are responsible for the increase - green tea has the most of these compounds, on average 4 times more then black tea.

There are many natural ways to increase bone health and prevent and reverse mild osteoporosis and osteopenia. Schedule a visit today to talk about bone health.

A decade-long study of older women found that tea drinkers had slightly stronger bones, while moderate coffee drinking caused no harm. Heavy coffee intake—over five cups a day—was linked to lower bone density, especially in women who consumed more alcohol. Tea’s benefits may stem from catechin...

Coleus, a tropical plant that produces the compound forskolin, has recently been studied for its ability to stimulate weight loss. This study on forskolin showed that when given to patients with an aggressive from of leukemia it stops the cancer cells from growing and also increases the effectiveness of chemotherapy.

Forskolin, a plant-derived compound, shows surprising potential against one of the most aggressive forms of leukemia. Researchers discovered that it not only stops cancer cells from growing but also makes them far more vulnerable to chemotherapy by preventing them from pumping out the drugs meant to...

New clues into what is causing long COVID have come from researchers that found Co-Infections, namely reactivated Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) and in other countries latent Tuberculosis. Researchers found that 2/3 people with long COVID tested positive for reactivated EBV. Severity of symptoms tracked with antibody activity with the worst symptoms having the most detectable antibodies.

If you're suffering from long COVID, reach out and we can help get you feeling better.

Scientists are uncovering a new possibility behind long COVID’s stubborn symptoms: hidden infections that awaken or emerge alongside SARS-CoV-2. Evidence is mounting that viruses like Epstein-Barr and even latent tuberculosis may flare up when COVID disrupts the immune system, creating lingering f...

Ovarian cancer causes the highest number of deaths of all gynecological cancers. This study of ovarian cancer cells showed that THC and CBD, the two main chemicals in cannabis, slowed cancer cell growth and also reduced cancer cell migration. Surprisingly, each compound on its own didn't have an effect, but when given together they showed this effect.

Scientists have discovered that key compounds from cannabis—CBD and THC—show surprisingly strong effects against ovarian cancer cells. Used together, they slow cell growth, reduce colony formation, and may even block the cancer’s ability to spread. Even more promising, the treatment caused min...

I love this study because it shows that things besides medications or even supplements can have an impact on health. Being optimistic, having regular high-quality sleep, and strong social ties were all associated with having a younger "brain age" on MRI scans. The participants with the highest number of protective factors started the study with brains that looked a dramatic 8 years younger then their actual age.

New research shows that your brain’s “true age” can shift dramatically depending on how you live, with optimism, restorative sleep, stress management, and strong social support acting like powerful anti-aging tools. Using advanced MRI-based brain-age estimates, scientists found that people wit...

Many western countries including America are undergoing a dramatic change in alcohol consumption, with some statistics showing the lowest amount of consumers since prohibition. Studies like this support that drop, showing that even moderate drinking can increase cancer risk - the risk is especially increased in people with other risk factors like obesity and smoking.

Interesting and concerning change in mental well being over time has taken place.

Mental health used to be best in childhood and then decline until mid-life until rebounding toward the end of life. That "U Shaped" curve has disappeared and now mental health is WORSE in the youth then in any other age group.

The researchers speculate on the cause with increased social media use making the most sense.

Once a universal feature of human psychology, the “unhappiness hump” in midlife has disappeared, replaced by a new trend: mental health is worst in youth and improves with age. Data from the U.S., U.K., and dozens of countries suggest today’s young people are driving this shift, facing deeper ...

This interesting study has found bacteria in the plaques that are responsible for heart attacks. The authors posit that an infection or some other trigger activates the biofilm the bacteria live in, they start to reproduce triggering immune system activation, inflammation, and ultimately plaque rupture.

The bacteria are common oral bacteria strengthening the known link between oral health and cardiovascular health.

Scientists from Finland and the UK have uncovered groundbreaking evidence that heart attacks may be triggered by infectious processes rather than just cholesterol and lifestyle factors. Hidden bacterial biofilms inside arterial plaques can remain dormant for decades, shielded from the immune system,...

Prenatal exposure to phthalates, chemicals commonly found in plastics and personal care products, can disrupt newborn metabolism and brain development. Researchers found altered energy metabolism and communication patterns in the brains of infants exposed in utero. These early disruptions may increase long-term risks for metabolic and cognitive disorders.
