🌟 AAC Awareness Month: Quick Tips for Supporting AAC Learners! 🌟
Every child deserves a voice — and for many of our learners, Augmentative and Alternative Communication helps them express their thoughts, needs, and ideas. Supporting an AAC user doesn’t have to be complicated! Here are a few simple ways you can help build their communication skills every day:
💬 Model, model, model!
Show your child how to use their AAC system by selecting words while you talk. This helps them learn the meaning of symbols and how to use them naturally in conversation.
🧩 Provide access to both core and fringe words!
Core words (like “go,” “want,” “more”) are used often and in many ways. Fringe words (like “cookie,” “swing,” or “book”) add specific details that make communication more meaningful.
⏳ Pause and wait!
Give your child time to process and respond. A few extra seconds can make all the difference in helping them communicate at their own pace.
💖 Acknowledge every communication attempt!
Whether a message is intentional or still being explored, respond and celebrate the effort — it helps build confidence and motivation to communicate.
Every interaction is a chance to support language growth and connection. Together, we can make communication accessible for all! 💬✨
