It's always fun to get out and see other gardens! While visiting the Tulip Festival in Mount Vernon, I visited a friend who lives nearby. I love the whimsy in her garden!

Did you know that April is National Native Plant Month?

Over the past 5 years, our stewardship of Dragonfly Farms has involved habitat restoration and new sanctuary gardens featuring native plants. Sometimes I think it's a big task, and a bit overwhelming, but so rewarding!

I recently visited the Glen Canyon area in Arizona, and witnessed restoration along the banks of the Colorado River, replacing non-native invasive tamarisk trees (also known as saltcedar) with native species of willow and cottonwood. Now THAT's a big task!

What can you do in your little habitat?

We were out of town for the last couple of weeks and missed most of the exciting weather events. Thankfully we have reliable farm sitters! It was nice to return to see signs of spring! Happy vernal equinox all!

Frost predicted tonight! Harvested the last couple of tomatoes on the volunteer tomato plant, picked a ton of spearmint and chocolate mint – I tried to clean as much out of the beds as possible – and dried several trays of spearmint. Some of the sunchokes were beaten down by the wind and rain so they were captured as well. Still picking apples and pears, and trying to figure out what to do with all this bounty! A good problem to have!

It’s pear time! Yesterday we made apple-pear butter and a pear crumble, and dehydrated 8 trays of pears. Today we’re thinking pear chutney and a butternut squash pear soup. What are your favorite pear recipes?
