Bulky winter coats may keep kids warm outside—but they can make car seats dangerous. The AAP warns that puffy coats create extra space under the harness, which can cause it to be too loose in a crash.
Here’s how to keep your child safe AND warm this winter:
🧥 No bulky coats in the car seat
Harness straps must lie flat and snug against your child’s chest. Puffy coats compress in a crash and increase injury risk.
🛡️ Do the pinch test
After buckling, try to pinch the strap at the shoulder. If you can pinch extra material, it’s too loose.
🌡️ Warm alternatives recommended by the AAP:
• Put the coat on after buckling
• Use a blanket over the harness
• Dress kids in thin, warm layers
• Use a car seat–safe poncho or fleece jacket
• Warm the car in advance when possible
🧊 Rear-facing is safest
Keep kids rear-facing as long as possible per your seat’s height/weight limits.
Keeping little ones warm shouldn’t come at the cost of safety. A properly fitted harness always comes first. 💙
