Doug Sawyer of Urbandale, Iowa, felt vulnerable before his first radiation treatment for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. The large machine. The radiation beam aimed at his head. The uncertainty of how his body would respond.

What made the biggest difference? The compassion of the MercyOne Des Moines Radiation Oncology team.

“The kindness of the radiation therapists is what I’ll remember most,” Sawyer said. “Connections with people are so important and so appreciated when you’re filled with trepidation.”

Sawyer completed 15 radiation treatments while continuing to work and coach youth soccer. He credits the care team for helping him feel supported and confident throughout his journey.
