Realms of Wellness: Community and Wellness
Communities are made up of people who share resources. They come in many sizes. Being connected within a healthy, supportive, trusting community supports our wellbeing. Today, consider your community participation and the health of your local community (neighborhood, church, town, city, volunteer group, apartment building). How are you contributing and benefiting from your community?
Here are some ideas: Call a neighbor, go for a walk with someone who lives in your apartment building, share produce from your garden at the local food pantry, ask for assistance, beautify your yard or a local park.
***Share your ideas and what you’re already doing to keep the community aspect of wellness in balance!

How much do you need? According to the American College of Sports Medicine, the average person should get a minimum of 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity exercise (or a combination of the two) each week for health and fitness maintenance.

“METs,” or metabolic equivalents, are a way of categorizing the level of difficulty of an activity based on energy expenditure. Light intensity: 2.0-2.9 METs, Moderate intensity: 3.0-5.9 METs, Vigorous intensity: 6.0 METs or more. Here’s a handly MET chart to help you get a sense of how your favorite ways of moving are categorized >>> https://www.health.harvard.edu/staying-healthy/met-hour-equivalents-of-various-physical-activities

Haven’t exercised in a while? Have some health issues that have come up since the last time you exercised consistently? Check in with your doctor or physical therapist before you get back into the groove of moving! We want to make sure that it is safe for you to exercise, and that you workout at a beneficial level for your body.

Attention all MDs, DOs, PAs, and DNPs: Chronic Pain is best treated with Pain Neuroscience Education (PNE) provided in patient-friendly terminology. When you encounter a patient with chronic pain, please send the patient to a qualified PT before considering surgery or injections. If we address the suspected anatomical source of the pain without addressing the nervous system’s adaptations, the patient will very likely continue to have symptoms after the medical intervention.
Eagan Physical Therapist Elizabeth Gibbons provides PNE to patients on a regular basis. She has pursued training in this area to improve her skills in educating patients about pain, helping patients progress toward pain freedom, and guiding patients as they return to activity.

How colorful is your dinner plate? One indicator of a balanced diet is the presence of multiple colors of food on your plate. That’s because different nutrients tend to show up as different colors in our foods.

A balanced diet includes the variety of nutrients everyone needs to stay healthy and to promote tissue healing. If your body doesn’t have the building blocks, it can’t repair your tissues!

>>> Yep, eating well is crucial to healing from musculoskeletal injuries!
