A deep thunderstorm, with the rain running across the window.
The glow of the midnight starts on a quiet evening?
That's why we put a skylight in an outdoor sauna.
But how to do it properly...
Most people will tell you that a skylight isn't worth it. Its going to leak.
I have experienced many skylights issues, but I couldn't get away from the idea of a skylight in a sauna.
There had to be a way.
We had multiple things to consider. We needed it to be a wood finish interior. We had a large custom glass window request, and wanted to maximize the view. We wanted to ensure it could hold up. With a massive 4'x7' footprint, we set out to work.
We designed a custom flashing to ensure that there is no way it could ever leak into the roof system.
✅ We flashed/waterproofed it 4 different ways.
✅ Flush glass design.
✅ No protrusions for water and snow to get stuck on.
✅ All caulk is protected out of the elements to helps ensure its longevity.
✅ We built it with worst case scenarios in mind.
✅ We ensured that if it ever does leak, it wont harm anything.
✅ It just drips into the sauna room, which is built with drainage into the floor, and is consistently getting sprayed down by the staff. Its meant to get wet. Its easy to pinpoint the problem and address it very quickly and easily. But it will never get into the roof or cause any damage.
Thinking outside the box is great, but requires proper follow through to pull off responsibly. It takes considerations, planning, tools & testing.
