If recommended, a bone graft is a crucial first step in preparing for your dental implant. A bone graft is a surgical procedure that adds bone material, either from the patient, a donor, or synthetic sources, to the jaw, increasing its volume and density. This creates a stable foundation for the dental implant to fuse with, which is essential for the long-term success and function of the implant. A dental implant is designed to replace a missing tooth from the root up. It starts with a fixture, which is placed into the jawbone where the natural tooth root used to be. Over time, the bone grows around this implant, securing it firmly in place, just like a real root.
Once the implant has fused with the jawbone, an abutment is attached. This connects the implant to a crown, which is the visible part of the tooth that sits above the gum. The crown is custom-made to match your natural teeth. Learn more about dental implants: www.akosg.com

Before dental implant surgery, imaging tests help Dr. Szutz at Alaska Oral Surgery Group determine if a bone graft is needed. These tests provide detailed, high-resolution images that reveal the bone’s density, volume, and structure at the planned implant site.
If the images show that there isn’t enough healthy bone to securely anchor an implant, Dr. Szutz can identify the specific areas where bone is lacking and plan a bone graft accordingly. Imaging also helps map out vital structures like nerves and sinuses, ensuring that any grafting or implant placement avoids these areas for your safety.
