Peak Center Services - Lactate Testing
Blood lactate concentration is one of the most often measured as well as most important parameters to assess for the purpose of enhancing athletic performance. But what is lactate and how does it affect athletic performance?
Lactate is a byproduct that is produced by the body during normal metabolism as a result of glucose utilization. When we exercise, and as the intensity of the exercise increases, the body relies more heavily upon glucose which results in the increased production of lactate as a byproduct. As you exercise with increasing intensity a point is reached in which the concentration of lactate in your blood begins to rapidly increase, this is know as your Lactate Threshold. At the lactate threshold and beyond we know that this exercise intensity can only be maintained for a moderate period of time before you have to decrease intensity or stop the activity all together.
But what does this have to do with athletic performance? All athletic endeavors elicit their own unique metabolic demands on the body. Each individual also has their own unique response to exercise. Testing lactate is the best way to see both how your body is responding to training and improve how your body responds to make it better match the demands of your sport. This is done by creating your own individual training zones based on your concentration of blood lactate at various points.
Lactate testing is the backbone of what we do at Peak, and we use specific protocols to measure lactate as well as fat and carbohydrate metabolism during exercise to create individual training zones and improve your performance.
Peak has been offering affordable Metabolic/Lactate Testing for over 20 years, our labs use the highest lab standards and equipment.
