Day 10: The Road Trip Plot Twist We Didn't See Coming

What was supposed to be a simple 6-hour drive turned into a full-blown 14-hour odyssey yesterday. 🚐💨

Apparently, I-80 gets some serious wind—so much so that they actually closed the road to pulling vehicles and campers under 20,000 lbs. Guess who didn’t know that was a thing? Yep, us. 😅

We ended up stuck in Rock Springs, WY for about 6 hours, baking in 95° heat and trying to kill time without losing our sanity. 🥵🌵

The winds finally died down around 9 p.m., so we hit the road again and rolled into our new campsite at 2 a.m. after a long, dark stretch of driving. To say I was “a bit grumpy” might be the understatement of the century. 😤💤

But—we made it! We’re now all set up at our new “home” (for however long that turns out to be). Welcome to the joys of this lifestyle: unpredictable, exhausting, and somehow still worth it. 🏕️💛

🌊☀️ What. A. Week. 🏕️

Wrapping up an incredible week of adventure at Bear Lake, and wow—what a trip! 🐚💙

We learned to paddle board (and loved it!), spent hours swimming, built epic sandcastles, collected shells, feasted like champs, and stayed up late around crackling campfires. 🔥🏄‍♀️🍔

There were sunburns, tans, and plenty of sleeping in… and the stargazing? Absolutely magical—nothing beats a sky full of stars after a lake day. 🌌✨

We’ve officially found a new favorite family vacation spot. Can’t wait to come back!

On to our last travel day—here's to Day 10! 🛣️🧡

🚗 Day 9 of Our Family Road Trip 🗺️
Only 200 miles on the road today, but what a day it was! We crossed through Wyoming, Idaho, and Utah—three states in one day! One of the wildest things about traveling the lower 48 is how quickly the scenery (and states!) can change. Back home in Alaska, we'd still be hours from the next town, let alone a different state! 😂

We made a bucket list dream come true for our teenager—standing in two places at once, just like in A Walk to Remember. Found the perfect spot right on the Idaho/Utah border and snapped the cutest photos! 💫📸

This trip has been everything we hoped for—backroads instead of highways, soaking up the charm of the cutest small towns (I’m a total sucker for a quaint little Main Street 😍), and now settling in for a weekend at the absolutely stunning Bear Lake. It’s nestled right on the Idaho/Utah line, and it is GORGEOUS—seriously, this place is a hidden gem 💎🌊

Here’s to a weekend of lake time, laughter, and soaking up the last leg of our journey before we reach our new home! 🏡❤️

Yellowstone & Grand Teton = Absolutely STUNNING! 🏞️🐻🦬🦌❄️

We’ve spent the last two days soaking in some of God’s most incredible handiwork — from geysers and waterfalls to snow-dusted peaks and wildlife galore. We spotted bear, elk, bison (SO cool!), and even got to explore the breathtaking “Grand Canyon” of Yellowstone. Nature’s beauty is truly next level here!

But wow… we also witnessed way too many people ignoring warning signs and getting dangerously close to wild animals and active geysers. 😳 One couple even had Rangers lay into them for getting too close as a geyser was erupting — tickets were issued, and more Rangers showed up. So PLEASE, if you ever visit these parks: respect the rules. They exist to protect you and the wildlife. Don’t be that person.

We’re wrapping up our time in Grand Teton tomorrow before heading into travel day 9. So grateful for this adventure and all the awe-inspiring moments we’ve shared. 💚

Day 8 – Majestic Montana 🐎🌄

Today’s journey took us through gorgeous Montana — and our whole crew agrees, it’s a stunner. The scenery had us all in awe: wide open spaces, rolling green hills, and more animals than we could count — cows, horses, sheep, buffalo, and even elk! 🦬🐑🐴

One fun detail we noticed: Montana loves its hillside letters! We spotted three “M”s (one for each of us girls ❤️), along with an F, L, and W. It totally reminded me of the "K" back home in Kelso — a little touch of familiarity in this vast, wild place.

Temps dropped a whopping 35° from morning to night, and toward the end, the wind kicked up and slowed us down. But we’re now cozied up near Yellowstone, ready for a few days of adventure. 🏕️

Also met a fellow Alaskan from Chickaloon while refueling — small world!

As some say, “Montana is little Alaska” — and after today, I totally get it. Big skies, quiet beauty, and endless open road. 🤍

Coeur D'Alene, you’ve been SO good to us! 💙☀️ We soaked up every second of those beautiful lake days (and maybe a little too much sun… so much for 3 months of “base tan” prep 😂).

We had an absolute blast at Silverwood Theme Park for our first time! Spent most of the day splashing around Boulder Beach, then capped it off with some epic rollercoaster rides. 🎢 Our little love called it the BEST day ever — couldn’t have asked for a more perfect way to celebrate her birthday (which is TOMORROW! 🥳🎉).

If you’re ever in the area, we highly recommend Blackwell Island and Silverwood RV Parks — both were awesome spots to stay! Now we’re off again — travel day 8, here we go! 🚐💨

Day 7: From Ferries to Family to 89° Fun ☀️🚗🌲

We rolled off the ferry in Bellingham bright and early at 8 a.m., and this Alaskan-blood family wasted no time pulling over to change into shorts—68° felt like summer heaven! 🌞💃

Drove through the breathtaking Cascades (and let me say this loud for the folks in the back: Washington ≠ Seattle. Seattle is Seattle. The rest of the state deserves its own love too. 😄🌄)

Met up with my parents in the charming Bavarian village of Leavenworth to reunite with our fur babies 🐾—but the surprise cherry on top? One of my fave cousins and my childhood bestie made the drive too! Complete with a custom road trip cooler just for us 🧃❤️ Too quick of a visit, but oh so sweet.

By the time we hit the road again, it was a toasty 89° and we headed east to Coeur D'Alene, Idaho for a long weekend of lake days, family fun, and birthday magic at Silverwood Theme Park for our littlest love 🎉🎢💦

Day 6: Ferry Life 🌊⛴️

Today was a full day on the ferry—no stops, just the rhythm of the water and the steady hum of the boat beneath us. The waves got a little bold in open water, but we rolled with it (literally). We passed the time playing games, laughing, and soaking in those endless views—Canada showing off again today 🇨🇦✨

Somewhere along the way, as we stared out at the vastness, we caught a glimpse of a rainbow. Just a faint arc in the sky—but somehow, it felt like a quiet little blessing.

The highlight? Our teenager made a happy face out of her chips and giggled a real laugh. It’s the small things, right?

But then came the sunset. And that hit different.

I’ve heard people say, “A sunset so beautiful it’ll make you cry,” and while tonight’s sky was stunning… my tears came from a deeper place. It was the ache of knowing we’re no longer home. Not truly. Not in Alaska.

And dagnabbit, that’s hard.

I miss the midnight sun—the way light dances at 11 p.m. in July like it’s got nowhere else to be. I miss the wild stillness and the familiar comfort of what we know and love. A sunset before 9 p.m.? That just doesn’t sit right.

Tonight is a hard one. But we keep moving forward—waves, rainbows, and all. 💔🌅🌈

Day 5: Sunshine, Sway, and Scenic Views! 🌞🎴🌊🎬

Today marked our fifth travel day and it was full of little highlights! We were greeted with bright, sunny skies—perfect for exploring Ketchikan, Alaska. 🏞️ Before docking, we even spotted jellyfish drifting near the port—a magical little moment to start the day! 🪼✨

We passed the time onboard with some classic card games ♠️♥️, then hit our first stretch of open water, which made the ferry rock a bit (just enough to remind us we're really at sea 🌊).

Wrapped things up with a cozy movie night in the ferry theater, waves gently rocking us into relaxation. 🎥⛴️

Day 4: Ferry adventures & Juneau joy 🇺🇸🛳️🌲
We boarded the Ferry Columbia this morning from Haines, Alaska and made our first stop of the day in beautiful Juneau! Spent the afternoon wandering downtown, picking up some awesome souvenirs from Alaskan Brewing Co. 🍻 and devouring the most scrumptious fish tacos ever at Deckhand Dave’s food truck 🌮🔥
Another fun day in the books — Alaska keeps stealing our hearts ❤️

🌦️ Day 3 – A Journey Through the Seasons!
Today we traveled through three seasons in one day! 🍂❄️🌷
Fall vibes in Haines Junction, full-on winter in British Columbia, and springtime as we re-entered our favorite place ever — ALASKA 🇺🇸❤️
Spotted a black bear and a cute little bunny along the way 🐻🐇
Now we're settling in for the night at the whimsical and peaceful Oceanside Campground in charming Haines, Alaska. What a journey! 🏕️🌊
