Shawna grew up in Star and earned her associate's degree from Idaho State University. She is our front desk mastermind and works SO hard to make sure everything runs smoothly for patients and therapists. When not in the office, you can find her on her Harley, working in her garden, playing with her dog, or enjoying a *spicy* margarita.

ASHA is proud to announce a comprehensive update of our developmental milestones for children ages birth to five years—which are now available on ASHA’s website: https://on.asha.org/dev-milestones

This update includes communication milestones—which are the speech, language, and hearing skills that most children will demonstrate by identified ages—as well as milestones for feeding and swallowing.

We love this drawing! Autistic folks are not "a little" autistic or "very" autistic. Autistic people, like all of us, need different levels of support in different areas of life at different times.

Love love love account!!! Especially this one that highlights how the spectrum isn’t linear!

Yes! Autism Awareness isn't enough - especially when so many awareness campaigns have historically focused on deficits and "fixing" autistic folks. That's why we need to do more! We need to create a world where Autistic people are embraced and valued for who they are and their strengths are recognized!

It’s APRIL - which means you will see Autism posted and talked about a lot. But what people REALLY need to know is that Autism is NOT “bad” or “wrong” - it looks different than what most people think - and we should be listening to and learning from Autistic voices! Be sure to download this advocacy handout/poster (it’s FREE all this month, then $5) from my website!

Some of my favorite Autistic run advocacy accounts:

And so many more- tag your fav Autistic run accounts in the comments - I always love finding new advocacy accounts to follow! 👏🏼

Yes! It's easy to focus on requesting, but "no" is an incredibly powerful word! Whether it's with body language, sign, spoken, or AAC, everyone deserves to say "no" when they don't want something.

One of the functions of language that is often taught to AAC users first is ‘requesting’.

I want a snack.
I want cars.
I want a break.

Another important language function that we need to model is ‘refusing’.

No!
Don’t want it.
Something different.

Having the ability to refuse with an AAC system is an important step in developing self-advocacy skills.
