Most providers treat where it hurts. I look at the whole picture.
This patient came in with neck pain. No lower back complaints at all. When we took X-rays, I found a Grade 2 spondylolisthesis at L5 they had no idea was there.
That finding changes everything about how I approach their care.
This is why I X-ray first. Not to run up a bill, not to find something scary, but because you cannot make a good plan without knowing what you are actually working with.

Had a patient come back from his trip to South America this week and what he told me was a good reminder of something I see all the time.

He almost canceled the whole trip because his back flared up the day before he left. Told him to go. Warned him the flight would be rough. Told him once he was there the walking and movement would actually do him good.

He came in today and said the flight was brutal but once they were exploring and on their feet all day, he felt better than he had in months.

When your back hurts, every instinct tells you to rest and wait it out. And sometimes that’s appropriate. But a lot of time, movement is exactly what your body needs. Staying still is what makes it worse.

Don’t cancel that trip. Move through it.

Three months off, first round back and your lower back is already talking. It’s not bad luck, it’s your body trying to re-adapt to demands it hasn’t seen since last fall.
