Adolescent mental health issues include anorexia. Here is a story of somebody who recovered, as told by her mother:

Let Me Speak - Hannah's Mother

“I cannot be with her in person, but today is a very special day for our family. This is the day, seven years ago, that Hannah decided to recover from anorexia. I’ll post her reasons for choosing this date next. Of course, I hope everyone knows that it is a long and painful journey to get to that point, and afterwords, recovery is not linear.

Even now, she needs to be careful to maintain her mental health regarding her eating disorder. It can be triggered (mentally), not in behavior, by so many things. She lives in NYC, ground zero for eating disorders. Most of her friends have disordered eating. Many of her friends take 3-4 exercise classes A DAY, EVERY DAY, wearing their Apple watches to check their calories burned each hour.

Anorexic fashion models people the streets. And everywhere, people talk about food ad nauseum. Not in terms of how delicious something is, but is it “healthy," is it “good” food, etc. all euphemisms for diet culture whether they know it or not. That would not trigger you maybe, but it sets off alarms in the minds of someone with disordered eating.

I usually write how happy we are about Hannah’s recovery, but today, I thought it might be better to talk about her recovery. Hannah volunteers for NEDA (National Eating Disorder Association), talking to people who have called the hotline. She has become a resource for many friends who have this mental illness. If you know somebody who needs help or someone to talk to, please let me know me and I’ll give them Hannah’s number.”

Let Me Speak about mental health. - Joel

I disappeared for awhile because I was (and still am) struggling with clinical depression. But today was a good day. A hopeful day. I want to thank everyone who responded to my posts & gofundme link. Whether you donated or sent me an encouraging word it really meant a lot. It gave me hope. I have a long way to go. Depression is a tricky thing. Whether it’s chemical or brought on by trauma or exacerbated by financial insecurity, the effects can be crippling, even deadly. It’s good to share. And if my story encourages anyone to be open about their own struggles with depression, all the better. Sometimes people can be a fully functioning depressive. You’d never know they were struggling at all. That was me for awhile. But then that person can fall into a major depression & isolate. This can be dangerous because all other things fall by the wayside. Relationships. Work. Bills. Mortgage. Etc. And then they wake up to find their outer life in as much chaos as their inner life. And things get even worse. That’s where I am. When dealing with depression you need stability. You need to be in a safe space. That’s what I am trying to fix now. My gofundme is not a cash grab. I am really working hard to save my house & will use the money to pay down debt by buying a used car to drive for lyft on top of my regular job as i work on my inner life with a therapist. The closer i get to my goal the less anxious i get. I also hope to pay it forward down the road. If I can pay every single person back I will. Thank you so much for listening. For sharing my story. For donating. Or for sending me words of encouragement. All appreciated. Sending you good vibes in return.

In Buffalo Healthy Living magazine:

By Helaine Sanders, MSW, JD

While accompanying my son on college visits in New York City, I recalled a map of Manhattan landmarks I created for my seventh-grade social studies teacher using postcards glued to poster board. As a student, I was placed on an interdisciplinary team in which teachers worked with one another to creatively engage students. My teacher, who I now call Janet, went well beyond our expectations, involving us in creative games, taking us on unique trips, and immersing us in non-traditional learning. I only wish my sons had the benefit of such an experience during their middle school years.

Janet and I are now friends, and when we recently met, she laughingly said, “You probably still have that map!”

Back then, when life was difficult at home, I would hang out in Janet’s classroom after school. While she wasn’t aware of what caused me so much anxiety, she was always there for me. Since then, I have learned that role models and heroines don’t have to be famous. They are often simply someone who cares, and any healthy relationship can spark these bonds. Perhaps it is because of Janet that I became a social worker after becoming an attorney and finding the litigation process to be too adversarial for me.

Everything I learned about kindness came from Janet. Now a social worker who focuses on working with adolescents, I continue to honor and embrace the values that I learned from her.
