Stroke recovery with scalp neuro-acupuncture.
Dr. Herbert Lau is pleased to announce that he had successfully completed 21 hours of comprehensive training totalling three days in scalp neuro acupuncture from July 15 to July 17, 2022. He is now a member of the Neuro-Acupuncture Institute,Inc. For detailed information on common clinical applications of scalp acupuncture, such as paralysis, pain, aphasia, sense organ disorder, neuropsychological disorders and others, please go to www.neuroacupunctureinstitute.org.
As a result, Dr. Lau had successfully used this scalp neuro acupuncture technique to effectively treat 2 patients for stroke recovery. One patient is a retired physician, an internalist who was diagnosed with right hemiparesis (right side upper and lower limb paralysis, motor and sensory), nominal aphasia (patient can describe an object, but cannot produce the noun) and dysphagia (difficulty in swallowing) from left cerebral hemorrhage. After discharge from the hospital, this patient went to a rehab center. After weeks of physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, he decided to include scalp acupuncture in his overall treatment protocols. After 20 acupuncture treatments, he had improved so much that he felt that he could stop all the treatment protocols. He can now walk with just a cane, can speak normally and can eat and swallow normally. He said he wished he could have started the acupuncture treatment even in the hospital, or in the rehab center, and that the insurance company would have paid for the scalp neuro-acupuncture thereby recognizing such a valuable complementary treatment for stroke recovery.
The second patient is a retired administrator who had a stroke and her main complaint was paralysis with neuropathy of her right leg, ataxia ( loss coordination of the muscles especially of the extremities) and balance. I had been treating her for over a year, initially with body acupuncture, and after July 2022 with scalp neuro-acupuncture. She reported that she is very pleased with the treatment, and is willing to pay cash for the acupuncture treatment since the insurance company does not cover it completely. Now, she is still using a three wheel portable walker for safety and security, but her gait is good, and she can walk without it. She has better balance and is more sure of her steps. She has adequate sensations at the bottom of her right foot and she is now able to button her blouse.
